Unable to Open Installer Packages on a Mac
By default, Mac OS X uses an application called Installer to install new applications to the computer. In some cases, the default application used to open installer packages can change, which can prevent new software from being installed.
To Change the Default Program for Software Packages Back to Installer:
- Open the downloaded .dmg file for the program
- CTRL + click on the installer package (e.g. the installer for the Garmin Express™ application is called "Install Garmin Express.pkg")
- Click Get Info
- In the Open with section, click the dropdown menu and choose Installer (if the dropdown menu does not appear, click the gray triangle to expand the Open with section)
- Click Continue (if prompted)
- Close the Get Info window
Once these steps have been completed, double-click the installer package. The installation should begin as expected.
