Garmin Chartplotter Doesn't Recognize a Pre-programmed Software Update on a 4GB Card

Garmin periodically releases software updates to add features or improve the performance of our devices. Many newer Garmin marine chartplotters accept the software update via the SD Card slot inside of the device. The required software update can be downloaded from the Garmin website, or purchased directly from Garmin.

Updates purchased directly from Garmin are programmed onto a 4GB SD card. Unfortunately, some Garmin devices running older versions of software are unable to recognize any SD card larger than 2GB. In these cases, the update must be downloaded from the Garmin website onto a blank SD card, no larger than 2GB in size.

This SD card capacity limitation affects the following devices and software versions:

  • GPSMAP 4x0, GPSMAP 5x0 and GPSMAP 5x5 series devices running software version 3.10 or below.
  • GPSMAP 4xxx and GPSMAP 5xxx series devices running software version 4.00 or below.
