Setting a Rino 500 Series Unit to Transmit at Five Watts of Power

The U.S. version of the Rino® 5XX devices are capable of transmitting at five watts of power on the GMRS radio system. The Canadian version of the Rino 5XX devices are unable to transmit on the GMRS signal.

The steps below will walk you through how to setup the Rino radio to transmit at five watts.

  1. From the radio page ensure that the radio is set to a GMRS channel
  2. Press Enter on the Menu Button icon at the top right corner of the radio page
  3. Select Setup Radio
  4. Select GMRS Power option and change it to 5W
  5. Return to the radio page

Now check the radio status at the bottom of the page and it should say READY TO TRANSMIT ON GMRS / RADIO 5W. If the radio status is not showing 5W (5 watts) then check to make sure that you are using the lithium ion battery that was supplied with the device from the factory. You will be unable to transmit at the 5 watt power setting if you are using the alkaline battery pack accessory.

GMRS and FCC Licensing Information

The Rino® 2-way radio operates on General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) frequencies regulated by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States. Operation on the GMRS frequencies is subject to rules as specified in 47 C.F.R. Part 95. In order to transmit on GMRS frequencies, you are required to obtain a license from the FCC.

You can obtain a license from the FCC by registering and applying online through their Universal Licensing System. For instructions, refer to the following FCC support articles:

For more information on GMRS, FCC forms, and fees, go to the FCC web page at www.fcc.gov/general-mobile-radio-service-gmrs.

No license is required to operate on GMRS channels in Canada; however, GMRS repeater channels are not approved for use by the Canadian government.  GMRS repeater locations in the US can be determined with an internet search.

For use in countries outside of the United States and Canada, check with that government for any restrictions of GMRS use.
