Syncing With the Garmin Messenger App on a Professional Account

When syncing a compatible inReach® device on a professional account, the Garmin Messenger™ app must be signed in as the sub-user that is assigned to the inReach device. The sub-user sign-in will be different than the Super Administrator sign-in on the account. If there is not a known password for the sub-user, follow the steps below to create one.

Creating a Password for the Sub-User

  1. Log into explore.garmin.com with the Super Administrator credentials.

  2. Go to GROUPS & USERS.

  3. Select the NAME of the sub-user in blue that needs a password.

  4. Select Change Password.

  5. Type in the new password, confirm the new password, then select Confirm.

  6. Repeat steps 3 through 5 for all sub-users that need a password.


Pairing With the Garmin Messenger App

If the inReach device has been paired with a different phone previously, make sure to remove the device from the Garmin Messenger app on the previous phone before attempting to pair the device to a different person's phone. Once paired to a new phone, the Garmin Messenger app will show all the messages that are on the inReach device, so you will see all other user's messages who have used the device previously in a single list. The device syncs the messages used by each phone number and then syncs that over to the Garmin Messenger app.

If the inReach device has never been paired with a phone before, proceed with the steps for pairing to a new phone. Instructions for each of these steps are provided in the sections below.

Removing an inReach Device from a Previously Paired Phone

  1. Open the Garmin Messenger app.

  2. Touch the profile icon or Gear Symbol in the top left.

  3. Select Devices.

  4. Select the inReach device.

  5. Select Remove Device, then select Remove to confirm.

Pairing an inReach Device to a New Phone

  1. Install and open the Garmin Messenger app.

  2. Allow any app permissions when prompted.

  3. Tap Get Started.

  4. Select Sign In and use the user email assigned to the inReach device to sign in.

  5. Follow the prompts to verify your mobile phone number, confirm you have read the End User License Agreement, then select Next.

    • NOTE: It is important to verify with the phone number of the phone that the Garmin Messenger app is being used on. If you use a VPN on your phone, it may need to be temporarily disabled during this step as it may prevent the app from being able to send the verification code to your mobile phone number. VPN can be reenabled after you have finished setting up the app.

  6. Enter the verification code sent to your mobile phone number.

  7. Select Next and follow the prompts to enable permissions.

  8. Select Done.
  9. Tap the profile icon or Gear Symbol in the top left.

  10. Select Add Device (or Devices > Add Device).

  11. Allow any app permissions when prompted.

  12. Enable pairing mode on the inReach device.

    Steps for this will vary depending on the model of inReach device being used, but the option to Pair Phone or Pair Device can typically be found by selecting Settings or Setup on the device, then Phone or Bluetooth. On some devices you may also need to select Forget Phone before it can be paired again.

  13. In the Garmin Messenger app, select Connect It and enter the 6 digit code from the inReach device when prompted.


Syncing With the Garmin Messenger App

After signing in as the sub-user and pairing the inReach device, there are no additional steps required to sync with the app. Syncing occurs automatically in the background whenever the app is open and the inReach device is powered on and connected to the phone via Bluetooth® wireless technology.
