Audio Channels on the VIRB 360
The VIRB 360 possesses four built-in microphones, and is capable of recording audio through all four in Spatial mode, or through a single microphone in Rear Only mode. For information on microphone modes, see the owner's manual here.
See below for a description of the audio channels used in each recording mode, and how they should appear in a video editing program.
Spatial
In spatial mode, three of the four channels will contain data:
- The "W" channel contains the audio information from all four microphones.
- The "X" and "Y" channels contain directional information which helps create the spatial effect when watching the video
- The "Z" channel is intentionally left blank, but is still included so that the other channels are read correctly by video editing software
Rear Only
In Rear Only mode, only one of the channels will contain data:
- The "W" channel contains the audio information from the rear microphone
- In Rear Only mode, directional information is not recorded, leaving "X, "Y", and "Z" channels blank
- Even though they do not contain data, blank tracks for "X", "Y", and "Z" are still included so that video editing software will read the "W" audio channel correctly.
