Suspending an inReach Subscription Service Plan

When using an inReach® subscription plan, there may be times when service for the device is not needed. In these instances, the subscription can be suspended while a cellular or Wi-Fi connection is available.1 If this is your first time suspending an inReach subscription plan we recommend reviewing Frequently Asked Questions on Suspending inReach Service before following the steps below.


Suspending inReach Service Using the Garmin Messenger™ App

NOTE: The following process only works with Garmin Messenger app compatible devices. If these steps are unavailable in the Garmin Messenger app, ensure the app is up to date.

  1. Open the Garmin Messenger app.

  2. Select Device.

  3. Select your current plan type below the picture of your inReach device.

  4. Select Change Plan.

  5. Select SUSPEND SERVICE.

    • If you are currently on an Enabled, Essential, Standard, or Premium plan, scroll down and select SUSPEND SERVICE at the bottom of the page.

    • If you are currently on a Freedom Safety, Freedom Recreation, or Freedom Expedition plan, select OLD PLANS > SUSPEND SERVICE.

  6. Follow the prompts to finish suspending your plan.

    • If you are currently on an Enabled, Essential, Standard, or Premium plan, select ACCEPT & CONTINUE, then COMPLETE PLAN CHANGE.

    • I you are currently on a Freedom Safety, Freedom Recreation, or Freedom Expedition plan, check the box for Confirm Plan Change, then select SUSPEND SERVICE > CONTINUE.

A confirmation email of the suspension will be sent to the account email.


Suspending inReach Service Using the Earthmate® App

NOTE: The following process only works with Earthmate Compatible inReach Devices. As of September 18, 2024, your inReach subscription can be managed in the Earthmate® app to  suspend your subscription. To use this function make sure the Earthmate app is up to date, for steps see - Updating the Earthmate Application.

  1. Open the Earthmate app.

  2. Select Three horizontal lines (Android™) or More (iPhone®/iPad®).

  3. Select My inReach.

  4. Select Manage Subscription.

  5. Select Change Plan.

  6. Select SUSPEND SERVICE.

    • If you are currently on an Enabled, Essential, Standard, or Premium plan, scroll down and select SUSPEND SERVICE at the bottom of the page.

    • If you are currently on a Freedom Safety, Freedom Recreation, or Freedom Expedition plan, select OLD PLANS > SUSPEND SERVICE.

  7. Follow the prompts to finish suspending your plan.

    • If you are currently on an Enabled, Essential, Standard, or Premium plan, select ACCEPT & CONTINUE, then COMPLETE PLAN CHANGE.

    • I you are currently on a Freedom Safety, Freedom Recreation, or Freedom Expedition plan, check the box for Confirm Plan Change, then select SUSPEND SERVICE > CONTINUE.

A confirmation email of the suspension will be sent to the account email.


Suspending inReach Service Using the Garmin Website

  1. Log in to the Subscription Portal.

    • When signed into your account at Garmin.com, the Subscription Portal can also be accessed by selecting Account Profile Icon in the top right corner of the page, then Account. From there select SUBSCRIPTIONS & SERVICE PLANS on the left of the page.

  2. Select MANAGE on the subscription you want to update.

  3. Select CHANGE PLAN.

  4. Select SUSPEND SERVICE.

    • If you are currently on an Enabled, Essential, Standard, or Premium plan, scroll down and select SUSPEND SERVICE at the bottom of the page.

    • If you are currently on a Freedom Safety, Freedom Recreation, or Freedom Expedition plan, select OLD PLANS > SUSPEND SERVICE.

  5. Follow the prompts to finish suspending your plan.

    • If you are currently on an Enabled, Essential, Standard, or Premium plan, select ACCEPT & CONTINUE, then COMPLETE PLAN CHANGE.

    • I you are currently on a Freedom Safety, Freedom Recreation, or Freedom Expedition plan, check the box for Confirm Plan Change, then select SUSPEND SERVICE > CONTINUE.

A confirmation email of the suspension will be sent to the account email.


1 As of June 5th, 2025, all consumer inReach subscription plans have the option of suspending service for up to 12 months with no re-activation fee, except for inReach Annual Contract subscription plans.
