What is the Galileo Satellite Network?

Galileo is Europe’s global navigation satellite system, providing a highly accurate, global positioning service under civilian control.  Galileo is a joint initiative of the European Commission, the European Union Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA) and the European Space Agency.  

Galileo is interoperable with other global satellite navigation systems.  With multiple systems available, users may receive more accurate and reliable positioning and timing synchronization.  

Galileo began offering its initial services in December 2016.  Once the Galileo constellation reaches full operational capacity, it will consist of 30 satellites -- 24 operational and six spares.  To learn more about Galileo, see the EUSPA's FAQ page.

Will Garmin devices work with Galileo?

Many of our products are Galileo capable. Garmin expects future released products to have the option to connect to Galileo from the GPS settings. 

To verify the device uses the Galileo Satellite Network, go to https://www.garmin.com/ and look under Sensors on the device's SPEC page.

Have any previously issued models received a software update to support Galileo?
