Using TracBack on Legacy Outdoor Handhelds

The TracBack® feature allows you to navigate back along a previously recorded track.

Most outdoor handhelds will start tracking automatically once a satellite connection is acquired, but some legacy outdoor handhelds will require that the track log be started manually and/or saved before TracBack routing will be available. Specific steps and recommended best practices for each of Garmin's legacy outdoor handhelds can be found in the sections below.

Resetting Track and Trip Data

Tracking will start automatically once a satellite connection is acquired. Due to this, it is best to reset the track and trip data at your starting point so your device knows the path you should follow back with TracBack routing. This also helps eliminate straight lines from your last known location to your current location (i.e. from your home to the current trailhead).

  1. Press the PAGE key until the main menu displays.
  2. Select TRACKS.
  3. Select CLEAR.
  4. Select YES when prompted with DO YOU REALLY WANT TO CLEAR THE TRACK LOG?

Saving the Current Track Log

  1. Press the PAGE key until the main menu displays.
  2. Select TRACKS.
  3. Select SAVE.
  4. The SAVE BACK THROUGH window appears. Select the desired time frame for saving the track or select ENTIRE LOG.
  5. Select OK.

The track is now saved and appears in the SAVED TRACKS list.

Performing a TracBack

  1. Press the PAGE key until the main menu displays.
  2. Select TRACKS.
  3. Select a saved track.
  4. Select TRACBACK.
  5. A map showing the entire track appears and you are prompted to select the point you want to TracBack route to. Select TO BEGIN to track back to the starting point or TO END to retrace the saved track.

The Pointer page appears to guide you to the selected destination. The distance and time remaining to reach the destination will be displayed at to the top of the screen.

To exit TracBack routing, press the ENTER key while viewing the Pointer page and select STOP NAVIGATION.

  2. Select Tracks.
  3. Select a saved track.
  4. Select TracBack.
  5. A map showing the entire track appears and you are prompted to select the point you want to TracBack route to. Select To Beginning to track back to the starting point or To End to retrace the saved track.

The Navigation page appears to guide you to the selected destination.

To exit a TracBack routing, select Options Icon while viewing the Navigation or Map page and select STOP NAVIGATION.

The Track Log feature must be activated to record your path of movement. To activate the Track Log feature:

  1. Press the MENU key twice to open the main menu.
  2. Select Tracks.
  3. Select On.

Saving the Current Track Log

  1. Press the MENU key twice to open the main menu.
  2. Select Tracks.
  3. Select Save.
  4. Select Yes or No when prompted with Do You Want To Save the Entire Track?
    • Yes: The new saved track is a representation of the entire track log from beginning to end.
    • No: A map showing the entire track appears and you are prompted to select the beginning point for the saved track. Use the ROCKER key to move the Panning Arrow to the desired beginning point on the map and press ENTER. Next, use the ROCKER key to move the Panning Arrow to the desired end point on the map and press ENTER.
  5. Select OK.

The track is now saved and appears in the Saved Tracks list.

Performing a TracBack

  1. Press the MENU key twice to open the main menu.
  2. Select Tracks.
  3. Select TracBack to use the current log, or select a saved track to use and then TracBack.
  4. A map showing the entire track appears and you are prompted to select the point you want to TracBack route to. Use the ROCKER key to move the Panning Arrow to the desired point on the map and press ENTER to start navigating the TracBack.
  5. Select either Follow Road (if you have downloaded detailed mapping data) to route back to the selected point using available roadways or Follow Track to retrace your original path of travel.
    TIP: Select Don't Ask Again if you want to use the same option the next time you use TracBack.

When the TracBack Navigation page appears, directions to the first turn on the track display at the top of the page. Move in the direction of the first turn. When you reach the first turn, the display provides direction to the next turn, and so on, until you have reached your destination.

To exit a TracBack route, press the MENU key and select Stop Navigation.

The Active Route page will appear, showing a route from your present position to the oldest track log point in memory. Steering guidance to each waypoint will be provided back to the starting point of your track log.

To exit a TracBack route, select CLR? or CLEAR? while viewing the Active Route page.

  3. Highlight the desired track log ('Active Log' or a 'Saved Log') and press MENU to open the options list.
  4. Select TracBack.

  3. Select On next to Track Log.
    When track logging is active the On button appears to be recessed.
