How can I get Special Instrument Flight Procedures into Garmin's Navigation Database?

Sometimes private procedures, often known as FAA Special Instrument Flight Procedures, are created for airports, including public airports.  These may be requested by the airport manager, for example, in the absence of a published procedure from the FAA.  The manager would hire a third-party procedure designer to design the procedure, and then depending on the arrangements with the designer these procedures could be handed over to the FAA for inclusion in the public data and ongoing maintenance, or the designer could keep the original design data and not make the procedures available for public display or download.

If you are interested in getting existing private/special procedures into Garmin’s Navigation database, the process is as follows:

  1. Go to the FAA's Special Instrument Approach Procedure website.

  2. Click on the Special Instrument Flight Procedures link.

  3. Click to access the Special Procedures spreadsheet.

  4. Click the link to download the Special Procedures spreadsheet.

  5. Click the link to download the Special Procedures Excel file.

  6. Find the organization listed in the column titled "Maintained By".

    • Contact this organization to request access to the procedure design source (FAA 8260/7100 forms).  Also, notify the procedure designer that AeroNavData must get all future changes to these procedures.

      • If the FAA is the Maintained By Designer, contact airport management to request to fly these procedures.

  7. The procedure design source must be e-mailed to AeroNavData's Source Librarians at source@aeronavdata.com.
