(2008) Service Advisory 0821 Rev A: GMX 200 TERRAIN (Non-TAWS) Function Over the Open Ocean/Sea

AFFECTED PRODUCTS

All GMX 200 units with TERRAIN Function enabled are affected.

DESCRIPTION

Garmin has identified that GMX 200 TERRAIN (Non-TAWS) alerts are not available when flying over the open ocean/sea (specifically any body of water at sea level). The TERRAIN Function operates properly at all other locations.

Normally an advisory thumbnail will appear in the upper left corner of the display when terrain within a five mile radius of the aircraft position is within 100 feet of the aircraft ‘s altitude or higher. Until the GMX 200 is updated with the next software release, the advisory thumbnail will not appear when flying within 100 feet of the ocean/sea surface. Also, the colors which depict height above the surface will not be displayed when over the ocean.

RESOLUTION

The next software release, SW version 2.20 or later, will enable the alerts and height above surface colors to be depicted over ocean/seas as they currently are for terrain above sea level.

Until the software update is installed in the GMX 200, pilots should be aware that TERRAIN (Non-TAWS) alerts are not available when flying over the open ocean/sea (specifically any body of water at sea level).
