Backing up User Data (Waypoints, Routes, and Tracks) from a GPSMAP 232/238 Sounder

It is a good idea to backup user data periodically in case anything happens to the device.

To backup user data for a GPSMAP 232/238 Sounder, a few items will need to be purchased:

  1. Blank Garmin Data Card*
  2. Garmin Data Card Programmer
  3. HomePort mapping software for a PC

*128MB is the maximum size the unit will accept

Once the above items are purchased, HomePort will need to be installed on a PC.

Please note that the unit will need to be at a software version 4.20 or higher in order for this process to work. If the unit software is not at least 4.20, the unit will either need to updated or an AC/PC cable, part number 010-10275-00, will need to be purchased and used with MapSource trip and Waypoint manager.

To backup the user data from the device to the card, please follow these instructions:

  1. Insert the Garmin Data Card into the device
  2. Power ON the device
  3. Press the Menu button twice to access the Main Menu
  4. Highlight the Card tab on the left side of the screen
  5. Press the Right arrow button one time
  6. Press the Down arrow button four times to highlight the button called Save To Card
  7. Press the Enter button
  8. The information is now being backed up to the data card
  9. Remove the data card from the device
  10. Insert the data card into the data card programmer that is attached to the PC
  11. Open the HomePort software
  12. The USB Data Card Programmer should appear on the left hand side of the HomePort software
    1. If the USB Data Card Programmer does not appear in HomePort, the drivers for the programmer may need to be updated. For instructions on updating the drivers, please see Related Content.
  13. Right-click on the folder called All Data that appears below the programmer
  14. Choose Send To
  15. Choose My Collection

At this point, the data will be saved onto the computer and the data card can be disconnected.
