Determining if a Garmin Chartplotter is Receiving NMEA 0183 Data

To determine if NMEA 0183 data is being received by a Garmin chartplotter, Garmin has added a diagnostic into newer devices to show which NMEA 0183 sentences are being received at the time.

This feature will work on the following devices:

  • GPSMAP® 7x3 chartplotters

  • GPSMAP® 9x3 chartplotters

  • GPSMAP® 1xx2 chartplotters

  • GPSMAP® 12x3 chartplotters

  • GPSMAP® 16x3 chartplotters

  • GPSMAP® 74xx chartplotters | GPSMAP® 76xx chartplotters

  • GPSMAP® 84xx chartplotters | GPSMAP® 86xx chartplotters

  • GPSMAP® 90xx chartplotters | GPSMAP® 92xx chartplotters

  • ECHOMAP™ PLUS chartplotters |ECHOMAP™ UHD chartplotters | ECHOMAP™ UHD2 chartplotters | ECHOMAP™ Ultra chartplotters | ECHOMAP™ Ultra 2 chartplotters

To view the NMEA 0183 diagnostics, please follow these instructions:

On a GPSMAP: From any screen Options > Settings > Communications > NMEA 0183 Setup > Diagnostics 

On an ECHOMAP go to Home > Settings > Communications > NMEA 0183 Setup > Diagnostics

The screen will now display a list of NMEA 0183 sentences that can be received by the device. This screen will also show the status of whether the sentence has been received or not.
