Error When Manually Uploading Activity Data to Garmin Connect

Activities recorded on a Garmin® device can be imported into your Garmin Connect™ account manually. If something is wrong with one of the files you are attempting to upload, you may receive the message, “An error occurred with your upload. Please try again.” Below are some examples of what can cause this error message.

If you are unable to upload your activity file to Garmin Connect, you can manually enter the activity using basic information. For instructions see: Create a Manual Activity in Garmin Connect.

The File Recorded by the Garmin Device Has Become Corrupted

Sometimes your Garmin device may produce corrupt files that are unable to sync to Garmin Connect. Several factors can cause file corruption, including but not limited to bad GPS data, power loss, or computer connection failures. While there is no way to guarantee file corruption will not occur, there are some things you can do to minimize its occurrence. These include:

  • Ensure your Garmin device’s battery power is sufficient to complete and save your timed activity before starting one.

  • If your device is connected to your computer as a removable drive or volume, safely disconnect it before removing it. (If your device is connected to your Windows computer as a portable device, it is not necessary to safely disconnect the device).

    • Windows: Select the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the system tray, and select your device.

    • Mac: Select the device, and select File > Eject.

NOTE: There are several third-party fit file correction programs on the web that may help to correct a corrupted file. However, there is no 100% guarantee that this will correct the file. Garmin does not provide any programs for correcting corrupted fit files, but you can search the web using the search terms “fit file fixer” or “fix fit file”. Please be advised that the use of any third-party tool is at your own risk.

The File You Are Uploading Was Recorded With a Non-Garmin Device

Some third-party devices create .fit and/or .tcx files that do not have the data structure required by Garmin Connect to be uploaded into our system. If a file is missing data that Garmin Connect requires, an error will occur.

The File Being Uploaded Is Not a Supported Type

Garmin Connect supports .fit, .gpx, and .tcx activity files. For a .gpx file to successfully upload to Garmin Connect, the file must include time information.
