Defining the Time, Pace, and Speed Measurement Fields in Garmin Connect

Our Garmin Connect™ platform processes the data of an activity in many ways to help you fully evaluate your activity data.

Below are the more in depth descriptions of various time and pace/speed fields that are displayed in the details of a recorded activity in the Garmin Connect website or the Garmin Connect app on a mobile device:

  • Moving Time: Includes only the time you were moving.

  • Time/Timer: Includes time moving and time not moving as long as the timer was running (if Auto Pause is turned on this will prevent time not moving from being included in this detail).

  • Elapsed Time: Includes all time from the initial starting of the timer and when the activity is saved.

  • Average Pace/Speed: Pace or Speed for entire duration of an activity.

  • Moving Pace/Speed: Pace or Speed that only includes time spent moving (does not include Auto Pause).

  • Best Pace/Speed: Best Pace or Speed recorded at any given point in the activity.

  • Active Time: (Ultra Run only) Includes all moving time and non-rest time while the timer is running.

  • Rest Time: (Ultra Run only) Includes only the time that you were detected to be resting while the timer is running.

Being aware of the differences between the various timing fields will assist you in utilizing them fully in evaluating your training.

NOTE: Time, Elapsed Time and Moving Time can and often will be different. For example, if you start recording your activity at 10 o'clock and save your activity on your device at 11 o'clock, the Elapsed Time will be 1 hour, but the moving time may be less if you stopped moving at any point during that hour and the Time will be different if you use Auto pause or manually pause the timer.
