What is Used to Calculate Calories on My vivoactive Series Watch?

Depending on what accessories are used with the watch, calories burned will be calculated in the following order:

  • Firstbeat - calculated using heart rate user profile data
    • To learn more about Firstbeat and the technology used in Garmin devices, visit their website and select your Garmin model: Firstbeat

  • Fitness Equipment - calculated using ANT+ enabled fitness equipment

  • Speed, Distance, and User Profile - calculated using speed, distance, and user profile data (height, weight, age, activity class, etc.)

The device will automatically choose the appropriate method. There will be slight variations depending on the method used.

How do I improve the accuracy of calories burned?*

Calories burned is dependent on heart rate data, an accurate user profile, and the type of activity being recorded. In addition, the devices calculate both active and inactive (basal metabolic rate) calories to show the total calories burned on a daily basis. To ensure that calorie burn is as accurate as possible:
  • Review your heart rate data to ensure it is being recorded accurately
  • Ensure that the information in your User Profile is accurate
  • On the vivoactive HR, vivoactive 3, vivoactive 3 Music, and vivoactive 3 Music (Verizon) there is a one-time calibration that can be performed by walking or running outside:
    1. From the watch face, swipe to view the My Day widget.

    2. Select the exclamation icon icon

NOTE: exclamation icon appears when calories need to be calibrated. This calibration process only needs to be completed once. If you have already recorded a timed walk or run, this icon may not appear.

    3. Follow the on-screen instructions
