Smart Notifications on a Garmin Outdoor Handheld

Some outdoor handhelds are able to pair to a smartphone or tablet through Bluetooth®.

This is helpful to be able to tuck your phone or tablet away and see what notifications it receives displayed on your Garmin device instead. For instructions on pairing, refer to your owner's manual.

Managing Smart Notifications

Many of the notifications that appear on the phone or tablet can be displayed on the handheld, such as emails/calls/texts received, calendar events, app alerts, etc.

Notifications can only be deleted from the phone or tablet.

You can manage which notifications show up on your handheld from within the settings of the Garmin Connect™ or Garmin Explore™ apps on Android or your phone/tablet settings on iOS.

Smart Notifications on the handheld can be disabled entirely at any time by going to Setup or Settings,  then Phone or Bluetooth, and then toggle off Smart Notifications.

Android

NOTE: Some devices are compatible with both apps. If you use both apps, the notification settings within the Garmin Explore app and Garmin Connect app should be set to match one another.

Garmin Connect App

  1. Open the Garmin Connect app.

  2. Select More (bottom right).

  3. Select Settings.

  4. Select Notifications.

  5. Select App Notifications.

From here, toggle to enable or disable notifications for All Applications or customize by selecting individual apps.

Garmin Explore App

  1. Open the Garmin Explore app.

  2. Select the profile icon in the top left.

  3. Select App Settings.

  4. Select Notifications.

From here, toggle to enable or disable notifications for All Applications or customize by selecting individual apps.

Additional Steps for Huawei Users

For Huawei phones, it may also be necessary to update the software on your Garmin device and adjust the App Launch settings on the phone to allow the Garmin Connect app (and Garmin Explore app, if installed) to run in the background.
Be advised that these steps may vary between different phone models. For specific instructions, refer to your phone's manual or contact your phone carrier. The following steps are provided as a general guide:
  1. Swipe down from the top of the home screen.

  2. Select the Settings Icon.

  3. Select Battery.

  4. Select App Launch.

  5. Select individual or batch select apps, where auto, secondary and run-in-background settings can be disabled/enabled individually

NOTE: You will want to select Disable for Connect (and Explore, if installed) if you are selecting individual apps.

iOS

These instructions apply to iOS 16 or higher. Apple® requires these settings to display notifications on connected Bluetooth® devices.

IMPORTANT: For app notifications you do not want to receive on a Garmin device but do want to receive on the phone lock screen, uncheck Notification Center.

Follow the steps below for each app you want to receive notifications from on your Garmin device. Below is an example for Messages.

  1. Select Notifications from the iPhone settings.

  2. Select an application you want to receive notifications from. In this example we will select Messages.

    1. Toggle Allow Notifications on.

    2. Ensure the Notification Center has a checkmark Blue Checkmark.

    3. Ensure Show Previews is set to Always (Default) or When Unlocked.

Following the steps above will result in your phone looking like this:
