Installing Software Updates to Garmin Dog Products Using Garmin Express Software

Garmin periodically releases software updates to improve performance, correct operational issues or add new features.

Most Garmin dog tracking handhelds and collars can be updated with Garmin Express™ software, but some older devices are not compatible with the program. For a list of devices and what programs are used to install software updates, refer to the compatibility lists below:

Updating Your Garmin Dog Products with Garmin Express Software

1.You need Garmin Express installed on your computer first. If you already have Express installed, skip this step.

2.Connect your Garmin to the computer with the appropriate USB cable.

NOTE: Some newer Mac computers may have only USB-C ports, which would require an adapter. Apple has a helpful support article that explains different USB types, how to identify them, and what adapters can be used: About USB on Mac Computers.

Garmin Express will be launched during the installation process. If you already had Garmin Express installed, launch Garmin Express.

Windows: Either double-click the Garmin Express icon in the system tray (next to your time), double-click the shortcut on the desktop, or search for Garmin Express in your Start menu.
Mac: Garmin Express can be found in the Applications folder in Finder.

4.Select the desired Garmin product, or click Add a Device and follow the on-screen prompts if your device is not listed. Add a Device in Garmin Express
5.Garmin Express will display the available updates. Click Install or Install All to install all of the updates.Updates Available Screen
6.Review the Terms and Conditions and click Accept to proceed.Terms and Conditions    
7.Review the important notes before continuing to ensure the software update installs smoothly. Click Continue.Important Notes Before Continuing

Once the update starts, Garmin Express will display the current progress.

TIP: Hover your mouse cursor over the progress bar for detailed progress information.

You will see an Updates complete! message when the update is finished.

Once complete, disconnect your Garmin from the computer and power it on to make sure the software updates installed successfully.

  • You may have to select install on the device to fully install the updates.
