Setting a Garmin Outdoor Watch to UltraTrac Mode for Longer Battery Life

An ultramarathon (ultra distance) or extra long hike may require a decrease in track detail to ensure sufficient battery life of the watch, while a normal activity may benefit from greater detail. UltraTrac™ mode is a GPS mode that decreases the recording rate of GPS data, providing much longer battery life while in GPS mode.

Uses for UltraTrac

  • Multiple day activities when you cannot charge your watch.
  • When precise GPS is not needed.
  • Conserving battery is more important than accurate tracking.

Using UltraTrac Mode

  1. Hold UP/MENU.

  2. Select or scroll to Gray gear icon Settings.

  3. Select Activities & Apps or Activities.

  4. Choose an app.

  5. Select the settings for the app (for example 'Run Settings').

  6. Select GPS or Satellites.

  7. Select UltraTrac.

Adjusting the settings on your watch allows you to determine your preferred balance between battery life and track detail.

Using External Sensors While Using UltraTrac Mode

Connected sensors that use Bluetooth® or ANT+® connectivity will continue recording while the watch is in UltraTrac mode. Using a speed sensor, foot pod, or a Garmin® heart rate monitor compatible with recording speed and distance data (such as an HRM-Pro™ Plus, HRM-Pro™, or HRM-Fit™ heart rate strap) is a way to record more accurate distance while recording an activity in UltraTrac mode.
