What Is the Garmin Cycling Coach Training Plan?
Garmin Cycling Coach can create a training plan in your Garmin Connect™ account that will send workouts to the device that adapt to your current fitness level. You can also view a week's worth of these workouts on the training calendar in Garmin Connect and see a plan overview and progress within the plan. When setting up the plan you can easily manage your training preferences by selecting the days you want to train or days you prefer to rest.
VO2 max and functional threshold power (FTP) are two key fitness metrics that many cyclists follow as a benchmark for their fitness. Your Garmin device automatically estimates these metrics from rides recorded with heart rate and power data. These metrics provide a foundation for your personalized training plan.
NOTE: Only one Garmin Coach plan can be used at a time.
If you don’t have a current VO2 max estimate on your device, you may need to record a few rides before you can use Garmin Cycling Coach. Refer to this FAQ for more information on VO2 max estimates. To learn more about this feature, see our Garmin Technologies Page or select a topic from the list below:
Sensor Requirements
To take advantage of Garmin Cycling Coach, you need a compatible Garmin cycling computer or compatible Garmin smartwatch. You also need a heart rate monitor and a power meter paired to your device. If you are using a Garmin smartwatch and cycling computer, you can broadcast your wrist-based heart rate data — captured by the optical sensor — to your cycling computer.
The combination of heart rate and power data allows the Garmin adaptive program to tailor your training precisely. Power shows the effort you are putting into your pedals, while heart rate reflects how hard your body is working to produce that effort. This technology and data ensure your plan adapts to your progress, guiding you toward your cycling goals.
If you have a compatible device paired to your Garmin Connect account, Garmin Cycling Coach can also be used with compatible Tacx® smart trainers using the Tacx Training™ app or Tacx Training™ Desktop app. Refer to Using Garmin Connect Workouts in the Tacx Training App for more information.
For the best results, record all your rides and other cross-training activities with heart rate data. That way, the impact of noncycling activities, such as running or playing tennis, is considered in your cycling training program.
Can I Reschedule a Workout?
No. If you’ve chosen the Garmin Cycling Coach your plan will be adjusted as optimally as we can based on where you are overall in your plan, your upcoming available days to train, and long workout days.
What Are Supplemental Strength Workouts?
Some watches provide the option to incorporate strength workouts into your Garmin Cycling Coach plan. You will receive a prompt asking if you want to add strength workouts while you are creating your training plan.
