Updating Software on the GPSMAP 295

The GPSMAP® 295 handheld navigator has two different methods of updating operating software.

The preferred method for downloading software to your device is directly through a Windows PC:

  • Connect the device to a USB 2.0 port on your computer via USB. These units require slower data transfer speeds, therefore the newer USB 3.0 ports that newer PCs have will not work. If your computer does not have a USB 2.0 port, you can buy a USB 2.0 adapter at any electronics store and plug into your computer.

  • Because the GPSMAP 295 has an RS-232 connection, you will need a PC Interface Cable and a USB to RS-232 converter cable. This USB to RS-232 converter cable can be purchased at any electronic store.

  • Also, ensure the Interface settings on the device are set to “Garmin”. To do this, press the “Menu” button twice to get to the Main Menu. Then scroll right until you get to Interface.

Follow this link and select on the blue Download button under Unit Software.

Once you have selected the Download button,

  1. Agree to the terms and proceed to the download page.
  2. Select on the blue Download button.

  1. Once downloaded, select on the file and run it.

You may need to allow changes on your computer to go to the next step.

  1. Select Next to proceed with the download.
  2. Select your GPSMAP from the list of drives, then select Next to start the installation to the device.
  3. Once completed, (safely eject) the device from your computer.
  4. You may need to turn off and turn back on the device.
  5. The new software version should be on the Splash Screen/Introduction Screen.

The other method for installing software to your device is through the Garmin WebUpdater program.

Important: If this is your first time using a computer with your device, you will need to download and install WebUpdater.

  1. Connect your GPSMAP 295 to a USB 2.0 on your computer with the PC Interface Cable mentioned above.
  2. Launch the WebUpdater.
  3. When the WebUpdater Wizard window opens, select Next to continue.
  4. Once your device is found by the computer, select Next.
  5. The following page will display what new software version is available for your device. Select Next to review the software release notes.
  6. Once you review the software release notes, select Next to review the software change history.
  7. Select Next to review the License Agreement.
  8. Check the box to agree to the terms and conditions and select Next to begin the software update installation. Please do not unplug your device from the computer while the update is happening.
  9. Once the software update is finished. You can select Next to see if there are additional updates available for your device. You can also select Cancel if you wish to be finished.
  10. You may now safely eject your device from the computer. ( Click here for help.)

Note: We strongly recommend using a Windows PC to update GPSMAP devices.  Apple computers have trouble recognizing GPSMAP devices on “El Capitan” and newer operating systems.
