Coordinates on Garmin Application Differ from a Paper Map or Chart

When comparing the latitude and the longitude coordinates to a paper map, the position formats on the Garmin device must be the same as the position format on the paper map. If the map is displaying in a different position format, there will be a difference in the latitude and longitude showing on the device.

According to the scale of paper maps, the latitude and longitude coordinates can vary in accuracy from 30 to 60 feet. This is posted on the U.S. Coast Guard's Web site. The accuracy of the device will also need to be taken into account.

This also applies to MapSource® and BaseCamp™ software.

To Check and/or Change the Coordinate Format on These Applications:

MapSource:

  1. Open MapSource program
  2. Click Edit
  3. Click Preferences
  4. Click Position
  5. Select the desired grid format from the Grid drop-down menu

BaseCamp - Windows:

  2. Click Edit
  3. Click Options
  4. Select Measurement
