Reducing Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) on Garmin Marine Devices

To reduce electromagnetic interference with a transducer, review the following tips.

  1. Install a ferrite bead on the transducer cable close to the end of the connector, which connects directly to the chartplotter, fishfinder, or sonar module, forming a loop the size of a softball. It is unnecessary to form a loop on LiveScope™  live scanning sonars. Position the ferrite bead close to the connector end

  2. Route the transducer cable away from other powered cables

  3. If a transducer or network cable must cross over a power cable, ensure the wires are orientated 90 degrees apart from the power cable

  4. Insulate the transducer cable (use rubber wrap, copper tubing, or EMI tape)

  5. Make sure the transducer cable and other cords are correctly grounded

  6. Ensure the chartplotter is grounded correctly

  7. Install a ferrite bead on the Garmin Marine Network cable as close to the end of the connector, which connects directly to the chartplotter, fishfinder, or sonar module
