Updating Garmin Marine Charts on Pre-Programmed micro/SD Cards

Garmin regularly releases updates to the BlueChart g3  and g3 Vision  charts twice a year and LakeVu g3 and LakeVu g3 Ultra charts once a year.

Handheld devices cannot be added to a Vessel in Garmin Express. If attempting to update a mapping card for use on your handheld (i.e. GPSMAP 78sc), a new version must be purchased from your local dealer or from Garmin.com

Checking for available updates

  1. Launch or Install the latest version of Garmin Express: How to Install Garmin Express
  2. If the Chartplotter or supplemental chart has not yet been added to your Garmin Express account, follow the steps in the related article:  Registering a Garmin marine device or pre-programmed chart card with Garmin Express

If you are eligible for a free or a discounted map update, Garmin Express will automatically present this these options once registration is complete. Garmin offers one free chart update per card or preloaded chartplotter. This new chart guarantee is valid within 12 months of purchase. If the chart that is being updated is not offered a free update, there will be a fee for the update.

Note: BlueChart g2 mapping on a Garmin Data Card will no longer be updated or exchanged as of December 18th, 2014.
