Using Course Points on a Garmin Watch or Edge

Course Points are custom markers you can add to a route using the Garmin Connect™ platform to highlight important locations. Think of them as personalized alerts for anything you want to be aware of during your activity, such as an aid station during a race or a dangerous intersection on a bike path.

When you follow the course on a compatible device, these points appear on the map and trigger a notification as you approach, much like a turn-by-turn direction.

You can organize your Course Points using the following categories:

  • General

  • Aid Station

  • Cycling

  • Personal

  • Landmarks

  • Hazard

Refer to your device owner's manual to determine if your Edge® cycling computer or Garmin® watch has this feature.

What Is the Maximum Number of Course Points My Device Can Handle?

The limit depends on your specific device; for example, Edge cycling computers typically support 200 course points, while most watches support 50.

NOTE: This limit includes both the custom points you add (e.g., "Aid Station," "Hazard") and every single turn automatically generated for the route. A long, winding course can have hundreds of turns that count toward this limit.

Why Did I Get a “Course Point Max Exceeded” Message?

This message appears when the total number of turns combined with your manually added points exceeds your device's limit. This is common on very long or complex routes.

When this happens, your device will automatically reduce the total number of points, keeping the most critical ones to ensure navigation still works. The error message will tell you how many points were over the limit.

Is There a Maximum Distance Limit for a Course?

While there is no fixed maximum distance for a course, very long routes can cause performance issues or exceed the point limit. This may result in seeing the message Course Point Max Exceeded on your device. To prevent this, you can:

  • Split the course: The best solution is to divide a long route into two or more smaller courses.

  • Reduce manual points: Be selective about how many custom points you add to an already long or complex route.
