Using Third-Party Apps with the Garmin Speak or Garmin Speak Plus

Important: The Garmin Speak App has been replaced by the Garmin Drive App. To continue using the Garmin Speak along with more enhanced benefits, please visit the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android) to download the Garmin Drive App.

Where the Garmin Speak or Garmin Speak Plus and Amazon Alexa are concerned, third-party apps are apps that do not have their own "skills" in the Amazon Alexa app. For information about skills, see the Amazon Alexa App page.

Third-party media apps (e.g. Google Play, iTunes, Spotify) can be used in unison with the device. The Garmin Speak or Garmin Speak Plus will automatically adjust the music volume when it gives navigation prompts, but it cannot control media played through third-party apps; for example, if iTunes is in use, Alexa will not respond to commands to skip or replay songs.

When playing media from a third-party app through the device, Amazon Alexa will stream the media from the internet rather than from locally saved files.

To Play Media From a Third-Party App Through Garmin Speak or Garmin Speak Plus:

  1. Follow the instructions in Pair with Your Smartphone  (If desired, follow the instructions in Connecting to the Vehicle Stereo)

  2. Open the third-party app (e.g. Google Play, iTunes, Spotify) on your smartphone and initiate the music by pressing play in the app

The audio will now play through the device or your vehicle's stereo and will continue to be controlled through the app on the smartphone.
