How to Install or Update Garmin BaseCamp

Garmin BaseCamp™ is a free application for backing up and viewing data recorded with Garmin devices, updating device software, managing BirdsEye imagery and maps, and much more.

NOTE: Not all BaseCamp features are compatible with all devices.

BaseCamp software is only available for Windows or Mac computers and cannot be used on a mobile device, such as a smartphone or tablet. For more details on which Garmin devices are compatible with BaseCamp software, see - BaseCamp Compatibility With Garmin Devices.

Installing BaseCamp Software

BaseCamp software can only be installed to Windows and macOS, and is not supported by other computer operating systems such as Linux. To download and install the latest version of BaseCamp software, select your operating system below for steps. For additional help there is a video available about BaseCamp installation.

Windows

  1. Go to https://www.garmin.com/software/baseCamp/.
  2. Scroll down the page and click Download Now under Windows Requirements.
  3. Click Download.
  4. Run the downloaded BaseCamp.exe file.
    • If you are unable to find your download or your browser does not prompt to run it, with the web browser open, press Ctrl+J and select the file from your downloads.
  5. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation.

Mac

NOTE: BaseCamp software for Mac is intended for Intel-based Mac computers. For Mac computers that use Apple silicon, installing Rosetta may enable the computer to use the BaseCamp program. For more details, see - Apple Support: If you need to install Rosetta on your Mac.

  1. Go to: https://www.garmin.com/software/baseCamp/.
  2. Click Download Now under the Mac Requirements.
  3. Click Download.
  4. Open the BaseCampforMac.dmg file.
  5. In the new Finder window, double-click on the Garmin BaseCamp™ icon.
  6. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation.

  1. Open BaseCamp program.
  2. Select Help from the top toolbar.
  3. Select About Garmin BaseCamp.

  2. Select BaseCamp from the top toolbar.
  3. Select About BaseCamp.

Updating BaseCamp Software

By default, BaseCamp software checks for updates automatically. You can also update the application manually. Before you can update, you must have an active internet connection.

NOTE: Updating BaseCamp software does not delete your stored data. However, before updating, you can create a backup file of your data to save on the computer or external drive. For steps, see - BaseCamp for Mac - Backing Up Data or BaseCamp for PC - Backing Up Data.

Windows

BaseCamp software for Windows can only be updated by downloading the newest version directly from the Garmin website.

  1. Go to: https://www.garmin.com/software/baseCamp/.
  2. Scroll down the page and click Download Now under Windows Requirements.
  3. Click Download.
  4. Run the downloaded BaseCamp.exe file.
    • If you are unable to find your download or your browser does not prompt to run it, with the web browser open, press Ctrl+J and select the file from your downloads.
  5. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation.

Mac

NOTE: If you installed BaseCamp software from the Mac App Store, this feature is not available.

  1. Open BaseCamp program.
  2. Select BaseCamp from the top toolbar.
  3. Select Check for Updates.
  4. If an update is available, select Download Update Now.
  5. Select an option:
    • To close the application window and install the update, select Apply Update Now.
    • To be reminded the next time you start BaseCamp software, select Later.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation, if necessary.
