Garmin Connect: Setting Your Primary Training Device

Designate a Primary Training Device (PTD) as your main source for training data and stats. If using multiple Garmin® devices, prioritizing one as your PTD ensures optimal guidance and data accuracy, supplementing our automatic data syncing. For the best experience, we recommend your Primary Wearable and PTD be the same device to unify training and daily health metrics. If you record data from multiple Garmin devices simultaneously, your Primary Training Device will provide the active calorie calculations.

To change your Primary Training Device settings, select a platform below to reveal instructions.

Garmin Connect™ App

NOTE: If the steps below do not match, ensure the app is up to date by visiting the Play Store (Android) or Apple Store (iOS).

  1. Open the Garmin Connect app.

  2. Select More (bottom right).

  3. Select Settings.

  4. Select Primary Training Device.

  5. Select which device you want as your Primary.

  6. Select Update.

  7. You should now see a Blue Checkmark next to this device.

  8. Sync your devices.

Garmin Connect™ Web

  1. From a web browser, sign into your Garmin Connect account.

  2. Select Watch with blue dot icon(top right).

  3. Select Manage Device Priority.

  4. Designate which of your compatible devices should be the main data source for everyday use.

  5. Select OK.

  6. Select Save.

  7. Sync your devices.

If you do not see a Primary Training Device selector in Garmin Connect, this means that you do not have at least two devices compatible with the Primary Training Device setting. If you have only one compatible device, it is set by default as your Primary Training Device and no selector will show.

If you use two devices, one compatible with the PTD setting and one not compatible, ensure that you sync the device with the PTD setting often. This ensures that your PTD device and Garmin Connect have the most up to date activity and Training Status data.  If you have both a PTD and Non-PTD, it is expected that the non-PTD capable device's performance metrics may not match exactly what is calculated by the PTD capable device. Your device will need to support both Training Status as well as the Unified Training Status feature to be set as a PTD. For a list of compatible devices, see: What is Unified Training Status?.
