Shadow Drive Mounting Considerations
The Shadow DriveTM sensor installation affects the overall performance of the autopilot. The following information is the most basic installation considerations and is essential to ensure the Shadow Drive operates effectively. The following tips apply to all Garmin Hydraulic Autopilot installations.
Mount the Shadow Drive horizontally
The Shadow Drive featuring female NPT 1/4" connections must be installed lower than the helm but higher than the pump and closer to the helm than the pump.
On multiple helm installations, the Shadow Drive mounts between the lower helm and the pump, not between the two helms
Do not install any angled or "T" fitting directly connected to the Shadow Drive
Only attach straight fittings to the Shadow Drive. Failure to install correct straight fittings to the Shadow Drive will result in errors and system failures
Do not install the Shadow Drive near sources of Electro Magnetic Interference (EMI)
Do not use Teflon tape or thread putty on any hydraulic fittings on the Shadow Drive or in any of the Garmin Hydraulic Autopilot systems
The tape or putty will eventually deteriorate, and pieces will flow into the Shadow Drive through the hydraulics to the other components of the autopilot, resulting in errors, valve blockages, and failures
For more information, refer to Pump Installation Instructions, then search for "Teflon Tape" or "Thread Putty"
Garmin recommends using Thread Sealant, such as "Loctite 567" on hydraulic fittings without an O-ring
Refer to the SmartPump Installation Manual then search and read the "Hydraulic Considerations"
The use of "Thread Sealant" applies to all hydraulic fittings on the Shadow Drive and all Garmin Hydraulic Autopilot system
There are more considerations that an installer and user need to be aware of. Refer to the Installation Instructions for the specific type of pump and the specific type of autopilot system; Marine Owners Manual Search.
