Cannot See the Maps from the SD Card I Purchased in My Outdoor Handheld

If you purchased a preloaded microSD map card and are not seeing the detail on your Garmin® outdoor handheld, this article goes over what to look for steps to resolve the issue.

This article only pertains to resolving issues with Garmin maps. If your map is from a third-party manufacturer, contact them for assistance.

Troubleshooting a Map Card

  • Make sure the microSD card is fully inserted and if applicable, that the door is locked: Support: Adding a microSD card to a handheld device

  • Ensure your device is up to date on its software. For steps, see:

  • Verify that the map is enabled for viewing.

    How to Enable Maps

  • If multiple maps are installed, they fall into a hierarchy. Specifically, City Navigator® maps take precedence over topographic maps and need to be disabled for topographic detail to display.

  • Provided you have GPS signal, handhelds are designed to display your current location. If the map you want to view is for a different region than you are currently located, the map needs to be moved to that region to see its detail.

    • On touchscreen devices, swipe directly on the map to move it around.

    • On non-touchscreen devices, use the thumbstick or arrow buttons to move it around.

  • Scroll around the map, and try zooming in and out between 20 feet and 2 miles.

    • For example, if you have a topographic map of Kansas and are in a very flat area of Kansas and zoomed in to around 40 feet, you may not see any elevation contour lines. Scrolling around and adjusting the zoom may show contour lines as elevation begins to change.

  • Change the map detail level. From the main menu, select Setup > Map > Advanced Setup or Advanced Map Setup > Detail

  • If it is possible the issue is with a map you downloaded, or one preloaded in your device. For additional troubleshooting, see Related .

NOTE: You can also verify the map card by viewing it within BaseCamp™ software. For steps, see - View Preloaded Maps, Preprogrammed microSD/SD Cards, and Downloaded Maps with BaseCamp Software.

I Am Still Not Seeing the Map Detail

If it is possible the issue is with a map you downloaded, or one preloaded in your device, see Related.

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, one final solution would be to backup the device, then reset it to restore its default settings. For instructions on backing up the device, see - Backing up, Viewing, and Transferring Data Using Garmin BaseCamp Software. For instructions on resetting, refer to your owner's manual.

If you have tried the above and are still not seeing your map, there may be an issue with the map card.
