Professional and Flex Team inReach Account SOS Protocol

For Professional and Flex Team accounts, it is important for administrators to establish their SOS protocol before users are out in the field using inReach® satellite communicators. This helps ensure that any training between the administrator, device users, and other key individuals occurs ahead of time, so everyone involved knows the process.

There are two types of protocols that can be taken in the event that an SOS is triggered:

GARMIN RESPONSE™ CENTER MANAGED INCIDENT

SECONDARY REDUNDANCY INTERNALLY MANAGED INCIDENT

Garmin Response-Managed SOS vs. Internally-Managed SOS

NOTE: It is important to keep the SOS active on the device throughout the incident, even when handling the response internally. The active SOS prioritizes both messaging and tracking. Once the rescue is complete, the SOS will be closed out by the Garmin Response team.

Garmin Response-Managed SOS

Beneficial for organizations who do not have an internal protocol for assisting with a local rescue.

  • Garmin Response center acknowledges the SOS and requests information on the nature of the emergency.

  • Garmin Response center contacts the account admin and emergency contacts. Tracking of the user who triggered the SOS is updated to 1-minute intervals.

  • Garmin Response center notifies the proper rescue agency based on the location and situation described by the impacted user.

  • Garmin Response center provides the impacted user and account contacts with rescue updates and status.

  • Garmin Response center maintains contact with the responding agency until confirmation that the rescue is complete.

Secondary Redundancy: Internally-Managed SOS

Beneficial for organizations who have an internal dispatch, or coordinators that can assist with a local rescue from either other team members in the area or another party.

While this can be customized to suit the organization's needs, the process starts with the impacted user reaching out to their internal dispatch or headquarters to report the emergency. Garmin Response center confirms the incident acknowledgment and coordinates of the user who triggered the SOS. Garmin Response center stands down unless further assistance is requested, or the appropriate parties do not interact with the impacted user. In the event that the Garmin Response center becomes involved, they then follow the same protocol as if it was a Garmin Response center managed SOS (shown above).

Tracking of the impacted user is updated to 1-minute interval. Internal dispatch/headquarters uses the Map tab of the administrator account to identify nearby team members, view updated tracking (or incident only), and communicate with the necessary parties to coordinate rescue efforts. Internal dispatch/headquarters confirms with the Garmin Response center when rescue is complete.

How to Schedule a SOS Test

For peace of mind and preparedness, an SOS test may be scheduled. To learn more and set up a test, visit: Garmin Response - Test Device

IMPORTANT: Do not test the SOS feature without prior approval. If testing the SOS feature without approval, charges may be applied for any rescue efforts.

SOS Notifications

IMPORTANT: You can enter up to 20 email addresses or SMS numbers. You can also submit a Test from this page to ensure that all entered parties are able to receive these notifications. The Garmin Response center is still notified of the emergency regardless.

If there are specific individuals within your agency that should be notified of an SOS, you can enter them in the administrator account. This can be utilized for either a Garmin Response center managed SOS, or internally managed SOS. These should be limited to key individuals who can facilitate in the rescue effort, or need to be kept in the loop. This helps to:

  • Limit confusion and unnecessary duplicate efforts with a simple communication chain of command and responsibility.

  • Preserve battery life of the impacted user by limiting communication.

  • Create a communication schedule to keep realistic rescue expectations with reliable, timely, and appropriate updates.

Setting Up and Verifying SOS Notifications

  1. From the Settings tab, select the SOS Setup tab.

  2. Enter email addresses or SMS numbers for each emergency contact.

  3. If necessary, click Test to verify contact information.

Test messages are sent to all email addresses or SMS numbers.
