Avoiding compass calibration failures on a TR-1 Gladiator Autopilot
If the Compass Calibration fails, and the up and down arrows both blink and the warning horn sounds, the system must be turned off by holding down the Deckmount On/Off button in order to recalibrate.
Please check the following to ensure the Compass Calibration can be completed successfully:
First, please ensure:
- The Compass Ball is installed correctly
- The Compass Ball is secure in its bracket and not moving around
- The cables from the Compass Ball are pointing straight down to be certain the internal compass is level and can read accurately
- Check for magnetic interference
The easiest way to check for magnetic interference is to use a handheld compass. While holding the handheld compass near the Compass Ball, look for inaccurate readings on the handheld compass. If there is any interference, this would also interfere with the Compass Ball. The Compass Ball may need to be re-mounted in a better location.
Second, please ensure:
- The boat is in the water while calibrating the compass. The compass cannot be calibrated on a trailer.
- The water is smooth and when calibrating
- The boat is turning starboard and not to turn back to port until the calibration is complete
When you have accomplished all of the troubleshooting tips above, your Compass Calibration will have been setup accordingly.
