The Typical Automotive Battery Lifespan, and How to Care for the Battery in Order to Maximize Battery Lifespan

A Variety of Factors - Including Locale, Conditions/Temperatures, and Usage - Will Affect the Overall Lifespan of a Garmin® Automotive Device's Battery.

Garmin's automotive devices contain Lithium-Ion batteries. Lithium-Ion battery lifespan is negatively affected by exposure to extreme temperatures.

Automotive devices should be stored in a temperature range between 32°F to 77°F (from 0°C to 25°C) when not in use to prevent permanent capacity loss. Devices should be operated only in temperatures between -4°F to 131°F (-20°C to 55°C). Exceptions:

  • The Garmin Dash Cam™ X110, Garmin Dash Cam™ X210, Garmin Dash Cam™ X310 driving recorders' safe charging temperature is between -20°C to 60°C (-4°F to 140°F).
  • The Garmin Dash Cam™ Live driving recorder's safe charging temperature is between 0°C to 60°C (32°F to 140°F).

The lifespan of a device's battery may be permanently reduced if stored at temperatures above 77°F (25°C) for extended periods of time.

Cold temperatures (temps below 32°F / 0°C) generally will not affect the battery's overall lifespan, though run time may be reduced temporarily.

Garmin automotive devices monitor the surrounding temperature and do not charge the battery below 32°F (0°C) or above 113°F (45°C). These temperatures are required by the battery manufacturers to maintain the performance and safety of the battery. Nearly all commercially available Lithium-Ion batteries share these charging restrictions.

Bear in mind that the temperature in your vehicle may differ from the temperature outside, particularly on the dash or windshield when in direct sunlight. It may be too hot for a device to charge, even if you believe that the temperature is comfortable enough that it should.

For example, during the summer months, a car parked in the sun may reach temperatures in excess of 185°F (85°C). This is why it is so important for you to store an unused device in the glove compartment or under the seat.

The battery in your device is built-in and is not replaceable. For more information see:  Replacing the Battery in an Automotive Device
