(2005) Service Advisory 0501 Rev A: MX20 and i-Linc Multi-Function Display (MFD) Units Equipped With ChartView™

PURPOSE

This Service Advisory identifies a potential problem with automatic chart selection that may occur with
MFD units that are connected to a CNX80 or GNS 480.

DESCRIPTION

Garmin AT has determined that when automatic approach chart selection is enabled on an MFD equipped with ChartView™ and more than one approach of the same type (e.g., GPS) exists for a landing facility, the automatic selection routine can select the wrong approach chart for display. The incorrect selection is known to occur when selecting an approach for a single digit runway (e.g., Runway 4), and charts exist for runways with two digits, one of which is the same as the single digit runway (e.g., Runway 14, 24, or 34), at the same landing facility. The sorting order of the charts may vary from cycle to cycle on the ChartView™ datacard, allowing the possibility of the wrong approach chart to be displayed. Regardless of which chart is automatically displayed, the displayed chart is identified correctly on the MFD, and the flight plan overlaid on the chart will be correct. The pilot will be able to identify the fault and can manually select the correct chart by going to the Chart Mode of the MFD and using the Select Chart function.

MFD LIMITATIONS

When controlling the aircraft based on navigational data, the navigational data source must be an approved navigation device, such as a CNX80, providing course deviation directly to the pilot. The MFD is limited to situational awareness and must not be used in place of an approved navigation device.

DISPOSITION

Garmin AT plans to fix this problem in a software release scheduled for February 2005. Once the software is approved by the FAA, a Service Bulletin will be issued.
