Camper/RV Device Routing Inaccurately or Giving Wrong Directions

Note: See Reporting Map Errors on Automotive Devices if you are unable to locate an address, wrong speed limits are displayed, or Points of Interest are missing or out of date.

See the troubleshooting below if a Camper/RV device is routing out of the way or the wrong way.

Examples of Routing Issues Include:

• The device is recommending a route far slower and/or longer than the optimal route

• The device is offering "out of the way" routes to a destination

• The device is making illogical routing choices (e.g. routing off of a highway, and then recommending to re-enter the highway)

• The device is ignoring avoidances during a route (e.g. recommending an unpaved road, when unpaved roads are avoided)

• The device refuses to route through an area where Camper/RVs are allowed

• The device is avoiding routes the RV Profile (weight, height, etc.) should allow

Update Software and Maps

Out-of-date software and mapping can cause a device to route incorrectly. View the articles below for instructions on updating your device's software and maps:

Usage Mode

Ensure the correct usage mode is selected. The device will need to be in the Camper/RV usage mode to receive appropriate Camper/RV routing.

Camper/RV Profile

An improperly entered Camper/RV profile can cause significant routing issues. Check your Camper/RV profile and ensure all of the information entered is accurate for your vehicle.

To Edit the Camper/RV Profile:

1. Touch Settings

2. Touch Vehicle Profile 

2. Touch the vehicle type you wish to edit

3. Touch the wrench icon at the bottom of the screen to edit this profile

Here, you can change your vehicle's information.

Ensure the vehicle's actual weight has been entered into the profile, not the maximum possible weight. Setting the profile for the maximum possible weight may result in unneeded restrictions. Navigation Settings

The route your Camper/RV device chooses is directly affected by the device's Calculation Mode and Avoidance settings.

To Access the Navigation Settings on your Device:

1. 1. Touch Settings
   2. Touch Navigation
   3. Ensure the Calculation Mode is set to Turn-by-Turn
   4. Touch Avoidances
   5. Select only the options you would like to avoid
   6. Touch OK

The device should now use these settings when calculating routes.

Preview a Route, Choose an Alternate Route, or Edit a Route:

There may be times you want to preview a route, see what alternate routes are available, or edit and shape the route. 

For steps to do this on your particular device go to:

1. Garmin Support Center
2. Enter your device model (Ex. RVcam 795) or serial number.
3. Type Alternate Route in the 'Search for a solution' field.
4. Select the FAQ from the list.
