Getting Started With Outdoor Maps Plus on an Alpha XL Navigator
With an Outdoor Maps+ annual subscription, you gain access to a wide variety of premium mapping content. This content is regularly updated. A subscription can be activated allowing mapping content to be downloaded directly to a compatible device via Wi-Fi. The topics below explain how to activate, download, and use the different types of mapping content that are available with Outdoor Maps+.
Activating Outdoor Maps+
To begin downloading Outdoor Maps+ content, a subscription must be purchased and activated on the Alpha® XL navigator if it is not already available.
NOTE: You must be paired to the Alpha® app to activate your Outdoor Maps+ subscription.
From home screen on the Alpha XL navigator, select Map Manager.
Select Outdoor Maps+.
Select Add Premium Maps with Outdoor Maps+.
Use the presented QR code to connect a compatible smartphone to the Alpha XL navigator with the Alpha app.
In the Alpha app on your smartphone, select
.
Select the Alpha XL navigator.
Select Outdoor Maps+.
- Follow the on screen prompts to purchase.
Activation will complete on its own shortly after purchase. Once the activation completes, you can proceed with downloading Outdoor Maps+ content to the Alpha XL navigator.
Setting Up Wi-Fi
To download Outdoor Maps+ content, the Alpha XL navigator must be able to connect to a Wi-Fi network.
- From the home screen, select
in the lower right corner.
Select Wi-Fi.
If necessary, select the checkbox to enable Wi-Fi technology.
Select Search for Networks.
Select a nearby wireless network from the list.
If necessary, enter the password for the network, and select Done.
Downloading Outdoor Maps+ Content on an Alpha XL Navigator
After activating an Outdoor Maps+ annual subscription, the following steps can be used to download content via Wi-Fi. These steps can be repeated to download multiple areas of the map.
NOTE: The software on the Alpha XL device must be up to date to download Outdoor Maps+ content.
From the home screen, select Map Manager.
Select Outdoor Maps+.
Select Download Maps.
Pan around the map to highlight the desired download area within the black boarder on the map screen.
Zoom in and out of the map using the
and
symbols to control the size of the area being downloaded; the area chosen and zoom level will determine the size of the download and map layers available.
Available storage space will be listed at the top of the page. Select
to choose map content to download.
Select the desired map layers to download.
Select the
icon above a map layer to get a description of the layer.
After choosing the desired map layer(s), select
in the lower left corner of the screen.
When the desired download area is within frame and all desired map layers have been chosen, select
.
Prior to downloading, select
to choose if the download is saved to internal storage or an external memory card.
The download will begin. Wait for the download to complete or begin downloading more content if desired.
While the download is in progress, make sure to keep the Alpha XL navigator powered on and in range of the connected Wi-Fi network. Depending on the speed of the Wi-Fi network, each download may take several minutes to complete.
Enabling or Disabling Outdoor Maps+ Content
From the home screen, select View Map.
Select

Select the Outdoor Maps+ layers you wish to enable or disable.
Outdoor Maps+ layers will be labeled with
.
NOTE: The Slope Angle and Slope Aspect layers may require an HDEM map update.
Editing Downloaded Outdoor Maps+ Content
Installed Outdoor Maps+ content can be edited to remove or add additional map layers when using the Alpha XL navigator for different activities. You can rename downloaded Outdoor Maps+ content, delete the downloaded content, or download/delete layers from the downloaded content area(s).
From the home screen, select Map Manager.
Select Outdoor Maps+.
Select the desired Outdoor Maps+ download to edit.
Select Name to rename the download if desired.
Select Delete to delete the download if desired.
Select Map Layers to delete or add additional layers to the download area if desired.
'Download area' is the region that was highlighted for the original Outdoor Maps+ download that was created.
Managing Your Subscription
When purchasing an Outdoor Maps+ annual subscription, there is an option to enable automatic annual renewal. If you need to update your payment information or cancel automatic renewal, this can be done by visiting garmin.com/subscriptions and signing into your Garmin account.
