Guidelines for Storing Rechargeable Batteries

When storing rechargeable batteries for long periods of time without use you should follow these guidelines:

  • Store the battery separately from the device1 in a dry location.

  • Ensure the temperature where the battery is stored stays within the range of 32° to 77°F (0° to 25°C).

  • Ensure the battery maintains a charge around 50%.

    • Ensure the battery is charged to 50% before storing and every 2-3 months thereafter.

    • Ensure the battery does not become fully discharged.

    • If temperatures exceed 131°F (55°C) some batteries automatically discharge to prevent future issues.2

Following these recommendations can help extend the life of rechargeable batteries.

1 This does not apply to devices that contain an internal battery that cannot be removed.

2 As vehicles can easily reach these temperatures, storing a device in a vehicle is not recommended for any period of time.
