Not Enough Space Installing Downloadable Map Content
The error message "Cannot install the content", "Not Enough Space", or "We're unable to install the updates" may display in your Garmin Express™ program when you attempt to replace existing (pre-installed) map coverage on a Garmin Edge® cycling computer with downloadable content (DLC) or when attempting to reinstall mapping.
Remove Preloaded Map Files
To resolve this error, you will need to remove the preloaded map files from the device by manually deleting the files to create enough available space for the downloadable map content you are trying to install. For specific instructions, select your operating system below:
Windows
IMPORTANT: Do not delete gmapbmap files or any files other than the recommended .img, .gma, .sum and .unl files; deleting necessary files from the device can cause adverse performance issues. Your device may not have all of the files listed below, but if they are present do not delete them.
Plug the device into a computer.
Press Windows key + E.
Select This PC (Windows 10 only).
Open the Garmin device drive.
Open the GARMIN folder.
Select all .img, .gma, .sum and .unl files.
DO NOT delete any gmapbmap files.
Press Delete on the keyboard.
Confirm to delete the selected files.
Eject the device from the computer.
Unplug the device from the computer to allow the device to apply the changes.
I Am Unable to Locate Any Image Files
If you are unable to find any of the files that are listed above you may have the file extensions hidden and will need to change the setting to show these file extensions.
Select View on the top bar.
Select the image above Options.
Select View.
Uncheck Hide extensions for known file types.
Select OK.
You should now be able to see the image files that you need to delete. The images below show where this setting is located in the file explorer menu on Windows 10 and 11.
Mac
IMPORTANT: Do not delete gmapbmap files or any files other than the recommended .img, .gma, .sum and .unl files; deleting necessary files from the device can cause adverse performance issues. Your device may not have all of the files listed below, but if they are present do not delete them.
Select all .img, .gma, .sum and .unl files and drag the files to trash.
DO NOT delete any gmapbmap files.
Empty the Trash.
Eject the device from the computer.
Unplug the device from the computer to allow the device to apply the changes.
Instructions to Install the New Maps
NOTE: Installing map content may require up to 20 GB of free disk space on your compatible Windows or Mac computer.
After removing the preloaded map files, you will need to plug the device back into the computer and return to Garmin Express to install the newly purchased map:
Windows: Either double-click the express icon in the system tray (next to the time), double-click the shortcut on the desktop, or search for Garmin Express in the Start menu.
Mac: Garmin Express can be found in the Applications folder in Finder.
Select the desired device.
Select Tools & Content.
Select the Purchased tab.
Select the cloud icon to download the map.
If you do not see your maps listed, you may need to select Sign In.
Can I Reinstall the Maps That Came With My Device?
If you later wish to switch back to the maps that originally came with your device, you will need to repeat the steps above to remove the maps on the device then reinstall the original maps following these steps:
Launch Garmin Express.
Windows: Either double-click the express icon in the system tray (next to the time), double-click the shortcut on the desktop, or search for Garmin Express in the Start menu.
Mac: Garmin Express can be found in the Applications folder in Finder.
Select the desired device.
The option to install the map will be available after this step on some Edge models.
Select Map Details.
Select Map Options.
Select Reinstall Map.
