Changing the Owner on a Consumer inReach Account

There is no option to transfer or change ownership of a Consumer inReach® account to another individual. When creating an inReach account, there are specific terms and conditions that must be agreed to before you can proceed with the activation and use of inReach products and services. For this reason, the account is intended to have a single owner whose information is entered at the time the account is created.

For families or groups of individuals who need to use devices simultaneously, the only option is to activate any additional inReach devices under their own consumer account (i.e. one inReach device per Garmin Explore™ account). When doing this, keep in mind that each account needs to be under a different email address.

Changing the email address on an account does not change account ownership. If there is a need to transfer ownership we recommend canceling the service and resetting the inReach device so that the new user can then create a separate account using their own information. Some examples of when service must be canceled include, but are not limited to:

  • When preparing to sell an inReach device.

  • Gifting an inReach device to a friend, relative, or spouse.

Canceling Service

Canceling Service on the Garmin Explore Website

NOTE: Canceling service may incur fees for early termination, and additional fees to activate again later. If an account was mistakenly set up under the wrong individual's information, such as when helping a friend or family member with a new device, contact Garmin Services Billing to discuss your options. The process for canceling your service is the same whether the inReach is suspended or active. 

  1. Log in to the Subscription Portal.

  2. Select MANAGE on the subscription you want to cancel.

  3. Select CANCEL PLAN.

  4. If you are currently on an Essential, Standard, or Premium plan you will be prompted with an option to switch to an Enabled plan.

    Select CONTINUE WITH CANCEL.

  5. Select CANCEL IMMEDIATELY when prompted to finalize cancelling service.


Sending a Cancellation Request via Email

If you are unable to access your account you may send your request to GarminServicesBilling@garmin.com. The request must state that you wish to cancel service, and also include the following:

  • Email address the service is under

  • Billing address of the credit card used on the account

  • IMEI number of the device

Failure to submit the proper information can delay implementation of your Cancellation.

Requests of Cancellation will be processed and become effective within 2 business days of submission. Garmin is closed on weekends and holidays.


Resetting an inReach Device

Steps for resetting the device will vary by model.

Alpha® 200i or Alpha® 300i Handheld 

Resetting the Alpha Handheld

  1. From the main menu, select Setup Wrench and Screwdriver Icon.

  2. Select Reset.

  3. Select Delete All.

  4. The Alpha handheld will reboot. Hold down the Power button to power the down the device.

Additional Steps for the Garmin Messenger™ App

If you have used the Garmin Messenger app and wish to receive an future inReach messages in your phone's default text messaging app instead of the Garmin Messenger app, you will also need to remove your phone number in the Garmin Messenger app using the steps below:

  1. Open the Garmin Messenger app.

    • NOTE: If you already uninstalled the Garmin Messenger app, reinstall it and follow the prompts to verify your phone number again.

  2. Select the profile icon or Gear Symbol in the top left.

  3. Select Accounts.

  4. Select Manage Garmin Messenger Account.

  5. Select Delete Garmin Messenger Account.

  6. Select Delete Account.

inReach SE® or inReach Explorer® Satellite Communicator

  1. Turn on the inReach handheld.

  2. Select Settings.

  3. Select Restore Factory Settings.

  4. Select Reset.

  5. The inReach handheld will reset and reboot to the activation page. Hold down the Power button to power down the device.

inReach SE®+ or inReach Explorer®+ Satellite Communicator

  1. Turn on the inReach handheld.

  2. Select Settings.

  3. Select Recovery Options.

  4. Select Restore Factory Settings.

  5. The inReach handheld will reset and reboot to the activation page. Hold down the Power button to power down the device.

inReach® Messenger or Messenger Plus Satellite Communicator

Resetting the inReach Messenger or Messenger Plus

  1. From the home screen, press Left Arrow Button or Right Arrow Button to scroll through the main menu.

  2. Select SETTINGS.

  3. Select System Gear Wheel.

  4. Select Reset.

  5. Select Delete Data and Reset Settings.

  6. The inReach Messenger will reset and reboot to the activation page. Hold down the Power button to power down the device.

Additional Steps for the Garmin Messenger™ App

If you wish to receive an future inReach messages in your phone's default text messaging app instead of the Garmin Messenger app, you will also need to remove your phone number in the Garmin Messenger app using the steps below:

  1. Open the Garmin Messenger app.

    • NOTE: If you already uninstalled the Garmin Messenger app, reinstall it and follow the prompts to verify your phone number again.

  2. Select the profile icon or Gear Symbol in the top left.

  3. Select Accounts.

  4. Select Manage Garmin Messenger Account.

  5. Select Delete Garmin Messenger Account.

  6. Select Delete Account.

inReach® Mini Satellite Communicator

  1. From the home page, press OK to open the main menu.

  2. Select Setup.

  3. Select Recovery Options.

  4. Select Restore Defaults.

  5. The inReach Mini will reset and reboot to the activation page. Hold down the Power button to power down the device.

inReach Mini® 2 Satellite Communicator

Resetting the inReach Mini 2

  1. From the home page, press OK to open the main menu.

  2. Select Settings.

  3. Select System.

  4. Select Reset Device.

  5. Select Delete Data and Reset Settings.

  6. The inReach Mini 2 will reset and reboot to the activation page. Hold down the Power button to power down the device.

If you have used the Garmin Messenger app and wish to receive an future inReach messages in your phone's default text messaging app instead of the Garmin Messenger app, you will also need to remove your phone number in the Garmin Messenger app using the steps below:

  3. Select Setup.

  4. Select Reset.

  5. Select Delete All.

  6. Select Reset.

  7. The handheld will reset and reboot to the activation page. Hold the Power button to power down the handheld.

Tread® - Overland Edition, Tread® XL - Overland Edition, or Tread® XL - SxS Edition GPS Navigator

  1. Touch Settings.

  2. Scroll down and touch Personal.

  3. Touch Device Reset.

  4. Touch Erase all data (factory reset).

  5. Touch OK.

  6. Touch Reset Device.


Creating a New Account

After canceling service, have the new user visit the Garmin Explore website to create or sign into their own Garmin account for activating their inReach service. For detailed steps, see Related.
