Transferring Map Updates, Downloadable Content, or Purchases on Automotive Devices

Only some content can be transferred to another device or owner. See the options below for the appropriate situation.


Transferring Map Updates and Downloadable Content from One Garmin Device to Another

  • The map update subscription, and other downloadable content and mapping products (e.g. Voices, Vehicle icons, Red Light and Speed Cameras, etc.) are non-transferable. If you own multiple devices or if you purchase a new device from a source other than Garmin, new content would need to be purchased for each device, since it cannot be transferred or sold between devices.
  • You may review the full terms and conditions for the map update subscription at the bottom of this page.
  • The exception to this rule is if your device should ever fail and if it is repaired or replaced directly through Garmin. If the device is repaired or exchanged through Garmin, either under warranty or outside warranty, the map update subscription and all other downloadable content & mapping products will transfer once you complete a Device Exchange by contacting Product Support.
    • NOTE: Any map product that is discontinued or no longer available for purchase or download (ex. some regional countries mapping) cannot be transferred to an exchanged device.  
  • Contact Product Support to provide an exchange receipt if the device is exchanged through a dealer.
  • Obtain a police report and contact Product Support for assistance if you are a victim of theft and a Garmin device has been stolen.

Transferring Downloadable Content or Purchases to a New Device Owner

Most of the purchases made for a device are not transferable if you decide to delete your registered automotive device and give it to another individual or privately sell it.

Below is a List of Downloadable Content or Purchases the new Owner can use if Loaded to the Device, but Cannot be Accessed in the new Owner's myGarmin Account:

  • Supplemental map downloads (e.g. purchases of other map regions)
  • Red Light and Speed Camera subscriptions
  • FM Traffic subscriptions

If one or more of the above is already loaded to a device, the new owner can use the existing product(s), but no updates can be accessed from myGarmin or Garmin Express™ software without re-purchasing the item, subscription, or service.

The new owner can update the maps on the device without having to purchase a new subscription because map updates (including the nuMaps Lifetime subscription) no longer require registration.

Lifetime updates can be accessed outside of myGarmin by connecting the device to a computer and downloading and installing Garmin Express.
