Garmin Radar Display Mode and Feature Compatibility

Many Garmin chartplotters can connect to a compatible GMR™ marine radar to aid in navigation using the various radar features.

NOTES:
• The ability to access a specific radar feature depends on the correct combination of chartplotter and GMR.
• ECHOMAP™ chartplotters are not compatible with any GMR.
• A new GMR paired with an older GPSMAP™ chartplotter may not be compatible. The functional design, software, and functionality of an older GPSMAP chartplotter may not process all the features a new GMR can produce.

RADAR Feature Definitions:

  • DYNAMIC AUTO GAIN: Gain levels automatically adjust to optimum settings for harbors, nearshore, and offshore in open waters

  • DYNAMIC SEA FILTER: Gain automatically adjusts sea clutter for calm, medium, and rough sea conditions

  • DUAL-RANGE OPERATION: This feature enables the fully independent split-screen display of far and near radar views

  • DUAL-RADAR SUPPORT: Using dual radar provides redundancy and allows each display unit on the boat to pull data from one of two different radar sources

  • DUAL-RANGE WITH OVERLAY: Single radar antenna can provide split-screen images on the chartplotter side by side, with independent range settings and controls for close and long-range. One or both ranges can be viewed as a chart overlay

  • MARPA TARGET TRACKING: This radar provides MARPA target tracking when combined with a multifunction display and heading sensor (sold separately)

  • NO TRANSMIT ZONE: Use to protect areas behind the radar from being radiated while providing full forward-looking radar capability. The no transmit zone also makes installation more flexible.

  • RADAR OVERLAY: Overlay radar images onto the chartplotter’s map page. Add an optional autopilot or heading sensor (sold separately) for best results

  • MARPA TARGET TRACKING: GMR provides MARPA target tracking when combined with a multifunction display and heading sensor (sold separately)

  • PULSE EXPANSION: Increase the duration of the transmit pulse, which helps maximize the energy on targets. Pulse expansion provides a more prominent target size on the chartplotter

  • AUTO BIRD GAIN: Locate flocks of birds at the water’s surface where baitfish are also likely to be found

  • ECHO TRAILS: A historical “trail” is left on the screen to help in quickly and easily identifying moving targets and potential collision threats

  • GUARD ZONE: Set the safety zone and receive an alarm when an object enters the zone

  • VRM AND EBL: Variable range markers (VRM) and electronic bearing lines (EBL) allow rapid measurements of distance and bearing to vessels and land

  • TARGET SIZE: Adjust the size of objects on the radar image

  • MOTIONSCOPE: MotionScope technology uses the Doppler effect to detect and highlight targets moving toward or away from the vessel in different colors to help avoid collisions, find flocks of birds, and track weather

  • CRUISING MODE: This shows a full-screen image of the gathered radar information

  • HARBOR MODE: Use harbor mode for inland waterways. It works best with short-range signals (2 nm or less)

  • OFFSHORE MODE: Use in open waters; this mode works best with long-range signals

  • SENTRY MODE: Puts the radar into a timed-transmit mode, configuring a transmit and standby cycle to conserve power. Enables a guard zone in this mode, identifying a safe zone around the boat. By switching from Sentry mode to another mode, the radar switches to full-time transmission and disables all guard zones

  • RADAR OVERLAY MODE: This shows a full-screen image of the gathered radar information on top of the Navigation chart. The Radar overlay displays data based on the most recently used radar mode

  • POWER SAVE MODE: Users can customize and prioritize power draw or performance

  • TIMED TRANSMIT: Users can set the transmit intervals to seconds rather than minutes

  • 60 RPM ROTATION: Allows a faster screen refresh rate for smoother target tracking (High Sped 60 RPM, Normal Speed 24 RPM). The GMR will use the “High Speed” setting to adjust to the highest available, up to 60 RPM, but it will be lower depending on range and drop down to 24 RPM if MotionScope or dual channel modes are enabled

  • TARGET SHAPE ENHANCEMENT: Utilized for attaining better target separation. Use the “Largest and Smallest” settings from the menu for fine-tuning. Use this feature with “Gain”
