Installing an External Antenna on a Tread Device

An External GPS Antenna with Mount (also known as the External GNSS Antenna) or External inReach® Antenna (also known as the External Iridium® Antenna) can be installed on the following devices:

  • Tread® - SXS Edition GPS navigator

  • Tread® - Overland Edition GPS navigator

  • Tread® XL - Baja Chase Edition GPS navigator

  • Tread® XL - Baja Race Edition GPS navigator

  • Tread® XL - Overland Edition GPS navigator

NOTE: The External GPS Antenna with Mount is the only compatible external antenna that can be installed on the Tread® 2 - SXS Edition and Tread® 2 - Overland Edition GPS navigators.

NOTE: These antennas operate separately from the VHF Antenna, which is used for the Group Ride Radio accessory.


Installing the Antenna

See the detailed video below for instructions.

NOTE: Each antenna fits into its own slot based on the shape of the cable corresponding to the hole in the mount.

1. Remove the four screws and nuts from the Group Ride pack and Locking Magnet-assisted Mount

    • The Group Ride Radio is only included with the Tread - SXS Edition.

2. After removing the screws, separate the AMPS Plate, Locking Magnet-assisted Mount and Group Ride pack

 

3. Thread the cable through the opening in the mount

    • External inReach Antenna Cable.

 

    • External GPS Antenna Cable.

 

4. Pull the cable back until it’s snug

5. Insert the screw into the mount which will hold the cable in place

 

6. Reinsert the four screws and nuts from the Group Ride pack and Locking Magnet-assisted Mount 

7. Connect the male and female ends of the antennas together


Installing the Antenna to the Tread® XL Dock

Note: This should be used with the Tread® XL - Baja Race Edition or when using the Tread® XL Dock.
  • Using the Male Connection, connect the antenna to the labeled input on the dock. The External inReach Antenna will connect to the Iridium port, while the External GPS Antenna will connect to the GNSS port.

The External GPS Antenna with Mount and External inReach Antenna will include both a male and female end of the cable that connects together. The External GPS Antenna will also include a connection that connects the cable to the mount.

  • Female Connection.

  • BNC Connection to External GPS Antenna Mount.

External inReach Antenna Connections

  • Male Connection.

  • Female Connection.


Enabling and Disabling External Antennas

1. Touch Settings 
  • If using the Tread XL - Baja Race Edition or Tread XL - Baja Chase Edition, first touch Apps. Then touch Tools before selecting Settings.
2. Touch Device
  • Skip this step on some devices.
 
3. Touch External Antennas
 
4. Touch the Antenna you want to enable or disable
  • The GNSS Antenna is used to provide a GPS signal for your device.
  • The inReach Antenna is used to connect to the Iridium communication satellites for inReach services.
5. Select Use when connected to the device to use the external antenna or, select Use the in-device antenna only to use the in-device antenna.
