Functions of the Garmin TR-1 Deckmount Switch

The TR-1 Gold and TR-1 Gladiator autopilots each have a component called the deckmount switch. This switch serves a three-fold purpose in the operation of these autopilot systems.

The deckmount switch powers the autopilot on and off. To power on the autopilot, press and hold the deckmount switch until the built-in Light Emitting Diode (LED) turns on. The LED will blink for approximately 30 seconds as the autopilot boots on. To turn off the autopilot, press and hold the deckmount switch until the autopilot and LED shut down, about 3-10 seconds.

The LED in the deckmount switch is an indicator of the function. On the TR-1 Gladiator, a blinking LED indicates the device is in standby, and a solid LED indicates the autopilot is engaged. On the TR-1 Gold, the LED will remain solid whether the pilot is in standby or engaged.

The second purpose for this switch is to engage/disengage the pilot. To do this, simply press and release the deckmount switch. A connected TR-1 Remote will show the change from Auto to Standby, or from Standby to Auto. When engaging the autopilot with the deckmount switch, the autopilot will be engaged in a Heading Hold.

The final function of the deckmount switch is the saving of all the setting while adjusting the settings in the autopilot. After everything is set up properly the settings must be saved, otherwise they will be wiped out and have to be repeated when the autopilot is turned off.. In order to save the settings:

  1. Press and Release the Setup button on the handheld.
  2. Press and hold the Select Load button.
  3. While holding this button press and release the deckmount switch quickly.
  4. Release the Select Load GPS button
  5. Your settings are now saved.
