Selecting Properly Gauged Power Extension Cables for Garmin Force Trolling Motor
The installation instructions for the Force® Trolling Motor (see manuals) provides guidance for selecting the appropriate gauge of wire for extending power cables to the battery bank when running a single positive wire and a single negative wire. It is possible to safely compensate for inadequately gauged wire by using two additional wires in parallel for positive and negative power connections to satisfy the amperage draw required.
Below is a table that shows the recommended AWG gauge in a two wire extension setup (see NOTE & WARNING below):
24VDC System | ||
Cable Length (feet) | 2 Cables (AWG) | Ideal Cable (AWG) |
0 - 15 | 8 | 6 - 4 |
16 - 25 | 6 | 4 - 2 |
26 - 30 | 4 | 2 |
32VDC System | ||
0 -20 | 8 | 6 - 4 |
21 - 30 | 6 | 4 - 2 |
NOTE: Minimum temperature rating of conductor insulation should be no less than 167° Fahrenheit (75° Celsius).
WARNING: Using wires of different materials, different lengths, different gauges, or inadequately rated insulation can result in corrosion and or excess heat that may result in fire; also known as an improper installation. Damage from improper installation is not covered under warranty. For more information on the Garmin Marine Warranty see related content.
