What Is Vertical Ratio Measurement on Garmin Fitness Watches?
Vertical ratio is a measurement of vertical oscillation, divided by your stride length, then expressed as a percent. Since stride length is the horizontal movement of running, it is the benefit of the action, whereas vertical oscillation is one of the energy costs of running. A low vertical ratio number indicates a small cost for a large benefit. The lower the vertical ratio, the more efficient your running.
Vertical ratio is one of six running dynamics metrics available when using an HRM-Fit™, HRM-Pro™, HRM-Pro Plus, HRM-Run™, or HRM-Tri™ heart rate monitor, or a Running Dynamics Pod with a compatible Garmin watch. For more information on all six running dynamics metrics and a list of compatible watches, see: Garmin Watches That Support Running Dynamics.
