Transferring Geocaches From Geocaching.com to an Outdoor Handheld Using BaseCamp

If you do not have a Premium Geocaching membership, you can still transfer geocaches to your outdoor handheld GPS device by downloading the geocache files to your computer and then using the BaseCamp™ program. You will need the appropriate cable(s) to plug the device in to your computer, then refer to the instructions below.

Downloading Files and Importing Into BaseCamp

  1. Download GPX files for the caches you wish to use.

    For instructions, visit the following help article from Geocaching.com - Download geocaches to GPS device.

  2. Open BaseCamp.

  3. Select the File drop-down menu from the top toolbar.

  4. Select Import into '[Name]'.

  5. Browse to the GPX files' location from the Import File window and select the desired files.

  6. Select Open for Windows, or Import for Mac.

Once the GPX files have been loaded, you should then be able to transfer the data to your handheld.

Transferring Files From BaseCamp to the GPS Device

Windows

NOTE: Imported geocaches can typically be identified by their name, but may occasionally be labeled with their code. If needed, you can double-click on a cache to open it and the cache name will be listed under Notes or Properties.

  1. Connect the GPS device to your computer.

  2. Open BaseCamp.

  3. Select the data to send.

    • To send one or more items, or a list:

      1. Select an item, list, or multiple items (using CTRL+Click or Shift+Click).

      2. Select the Device drop-down menu.

      3. Hover over Send To Device

      4. Select Send '[Name]' to Device, or Send Selection to Device.

    • To send all saved data:

      1. Select the My Collection folder.

      2. Select the Device drop-down menu.

      3. Hover over Send To Device.

      4. Select Send 'My Collection' to Device.

  4. Select the device to which you want to send the selected data.

    NOTE: Some newer outdoor devices, like the GPSMAP® H1 handheld, do not support transferring data from BaseCamp to a microSD card.

  5. Select OK.

The selected data will now be transferred to your GPS device.

Mac

  1. Connect the GPS device to your computer.

  2. Open BaseCamp.

  3. Select the data to send.

    • To send one or more individual items:

      1. Select a list, or the My Collection folder.

      2. Select an item, or multiple items (using Command+Click or Shift+Click).

      3. Click and drag the highlighted items to the Garmin in the upper left-hand corner.

    • To send all saved data:

      1. Select a list, or the My Collection folder.

      2. Select the Transfer drop-down menu.

      3. Select Send '[Name]' to Device.

      4. Select the device, and select the check the boxes for the data you want to send.

        NOTE: Some newer outdoor devices, like the GPSMAP® H1 handheld, do not support transferring data from BaseCamp to a microSD card.

      5. Select Send to send a list of all saved data to the Gamin.

The selected data will now be transferred to your GPS device.
