What Maps Come Preloaded on My Garmin® Handheld Device?
Many outdoor handhelds are only preloaded with a Basemap which does not provide any detailed mapping information, outside of some major roads, highways, state/county borders and some waterways.
First check what mapping comes preloaded in your Garmin device with the steps below.
Locate the Maps & Memory section. The PRELOADED MAPS field lists what maps come preinstalled.
NOTE: Models with a "t" typically have preloaded topographic maps. Some models are sold in bundles with maps, such as the GPSMAP® 276Cx. Information on these bundles can be found under the IN THE BOX section.
If the handheld has preloaded detailed mapping, but you are not seeing the detail, continue with the troubleshooting below.
If the handheld does not have preloaded detailed mapping, you can purchase maps to suit your needs from Garmin.com:
For example: topographic or hunting maps can be found under Outdoor Recreation > Maps.
IMPORTANT: Check Compatible Devices under a specific map product to ensure it is compatible with your handheld.
Troubleshooting a Preloaded Map
If you are not seeing detail from a preloaded map, refer to the following steps.
Ensure the device is up to date on its software. For steps, see:
NOTE: If you are using a GPSMAP® 276Cx outdoor handheld, select MENU while viewing the map page, then follow steps 3 and 4 in the instructions below. If you are using a GPSMAP® 67 or GPSMAP® 67i handheld, see - Enabling or Disabling Maps on a GPSMAP 67 Series Handheld.
Select Setup from the main menu.
Select Map.
Select one of the following options, depending on your specific model:
Map Information.
Map Manager.
Configure Maps.
Ensure that both the 'Worldwide DEM Basemap, NR' and the specific map you are trying to use are enabled. Any other detailed maps that are not currently needed should be disabled. Steps for enabling/disabling maps will vary slightly depending on your specific model:
Enabled maps will say "Enabled" or they will have a check mark or raised toggle switch next to them.
Disabled maps will say "Disabled" or they will have an empty checkbox or lowered toggle switch next to them.
Select the map, checkbox, or toggle switch, then Enable or Disable (if prompted) to change which maps are enabled.
If multiple maps are installed, they fall into a hierarchy. Specifically, City Navigator® maps take precedence over topographic maps and need to be disabled for topographic detail to display.
Provided you have GPS signal, handhelds are designed to display your current location. If the map you want to view is for a different region than you are currently located, the map needs to be moved to that region to see its detail.
On touchscreen devices, swipe directly on the map to move it around.
On non-touchscreen devices, use the toggle or arrow buttons to move it around.
Scroll around the map, and try zooming in and out between 20 feet and 2 miles.
For example, if you are in a very flat area of Kansas and zoomed in to around 40 feet, you may not see any elevation contour lines. Scrolling around and adjusting the zoom may show contour lines as elevation begins to change.
Change the map detail level. From the main menu, select Setup > Map > Advanced Setup or Advanced Map Setup > Detail.
Reinstall the map. For instructions, see
