Customizing the Map View in the Tread App

The maps used in the Tread app can be changed and customized for use with route creation and management.

When selecting Map layers in the Tread app, there will be a Map Type and Map Details.

  • Map Type is the main map being displayed.
  • Map Details are additional layers of data on top of the selected Map Type, allowing for more customization of map visuals.

The following Map Types are available in the Tread app.

  • Driving: Garmin CityNavigator and TopoActive roads and points of interest. 
  • IGN France: National raster maps for France produced by the Institut Géographique National. (Outdoor Maps+ subscription required)
  • NRC CanTopo: National raster maps produced by Natural Resources Canada. (Outdoor Maps+ subscription required)
  • NZTopo50: Raster Maps of New Zealand at a scale of 1:50,000. (Outdoor Maps+ subscription required)
  • Raster maps of Great Britain: Raster maps of Great Britain at a scale of 1:10,000. (Outdoor Maps+ subscription required)
  • Satellite: See a high-resolution perspective from above. Easily find the land features that matter to you.
    • This also has the option to display as a Hybrid, which highlights all highways, roads, and streets similar to the Driving map type.
  • swisstopo: Raster maps for Switzerland produced by swisstopo. (Outdoor Maps+ subscription required)
  • TOPO PRO: Detailed topographical maps for selected regions of Europe. (Outdoor Maps+ subscription required)
  • USGS quadrangle maps: 1:24K Quadrangle maps. (Outdoor Maps+ subscription required)
  • Base Map: Simplified map with basic lines

The following Map Layers are available in the Tread app. Not all Map Layer options will be available for all paired devices and regions.

  • Adventure Roads & Trails: Off highway roads and trails.
  • Atlas Points: Gazetteer points from Delorme Atlas & Gazetteer topographical map series. (Outdoor Maps+ subscription required)
  • Avalanche: Streaming map of an avalanche risk assessment. (Outdoor Maps+ subscription required)
  • Boat ramps: Database of boat ramps, kayak, and canoe launch sites. (Outdoor Maps+ subscription required)
  • Boundaries: Administrative boundary map including state, county, province, and more. (Outdoor Maps+ subscription required)
  • Buildings: Map depicting 2D building footprints. (Outdoor Maps+ subscription required) 
  • Burn zones: Map of historical burn areas. (Outdoor Maps+ subscription required)
  • Campgrounds: Displays information from the Ultimate Campgrounds database. (North America only)
  • Chronic Wasting Disease: Map overlay provides information about chronic wasting disease. (CWD) (Outdoor Maps+ subscription required)
  • Contour Lines: Displays differences in elevation.
  • Great Rides: Displays the Great Rides library. See the applicable FAQ below for more information.
  • Heritage Points: Database of worldwide heritage points including descriptions. (Outdoor Maps+ subscription required)
  • HMU: Game or wildlife unit boundaries. (Outdoor Maps+ subscription required)
  • Hunting Stands: A map depicting the location of established hunting platforms or stands. (Outdoor Maps+ subscription required)
  • Huts: Database of huts, mountain hostels, refuges, or similar facilities. (Outdoor Maps+ subscription required)
  • Hydro: Water data including lakes, streams, rivers, and other hydrographic features. (Outdoor Maps+ subscription required)
  • LTE Coverage: Map indicating areas reported to have LTE coverage. (Outdoor Maps+ subscription required)
  • Night Lights: Map depicting artificial light pollution affecting the night sky. (Outdoor maps+ subscription required)
  • MICHELIN Scenic Roads: Displays suggested scenic routes highlighted in green. (Europe only)
  • Off Road Parks: Detailed maps of off-road areas and private off-road parks with difficulty ratings to help you find the best places to ride.
  • Outdoor POI: Points of interest for natural features and outdoor destinations. (Outdoor Maps+ subscription required)
  • Parcel: Property boundaries with ownership names.
  • PlanRV Services: Provides one place to find service providers anywhere in the United States or Canada that have the tools and expertise to service your RV, big or small.
  • PLSS: Public Land Survey System boundaries. (Outdoor Maps+ subscription required)
  • Popular Paths (Moto): Popular motorcycle routes with a heatmap layer showing where other motorcyclists like to ride.
  • Public Lands: Shows the differences in National Forest, reservations, BLM (Bureau of Land Management), etc.
  • Relief Shading: Provides elevation shading.
  • Ride Trail Map: Ride map of mountain bike trails in the Alps and other selected popular European regions. (Outdoor Maps+ subscription required)
  • SkiView: Ski area and resort map. (Outdoor Maps+ subscription required)
  • Slope Angle: Map depicting the gradient of the terrain. (Outdoor Maps+ subscription required)
  • Slope Aspect: Map depicting the relative slope orientation. (Outdoor Maps+ subscription required)
  • Snowmobile Trails: Displays snowmobile trails. See Tread Series Device Snowmobile Trail and POI Information for more information.
  • SnowView: Winter satellite imagery over ski resorts. (Outdoor Maps+ subscription required)
  • Survey Marks: Survey marks or triangulation points/trig points. (Outdoor Maps+ subscription required)
  • Tracks4Africa Points: GPS points in Africa
  • TrailMaps: Map overlay including the waymarked/blazed international, national, and local trail network, with physical waymark color and well-known trail name. (Outdoor Maps+ subscription required)
  • TruckDown RV: Plan RV contains camping sites, RV sites, rest areas, and other points of interest to help you plan your RV or camping experience.
  • USFS Adventure: Displays information from the US Forest Service Adventure Points database. (North America only)
  • Walk-in Hunting: Map layer that depicts areas of private land that are enrolled in a state program that permits public access in accordance with state regulations. (Outdoor Maps+ subscription required)

To Edit the Map Type and Layers:

  1. Open the Tread app
  2. Touch the Map Layers button
  3. Select the Layers tab, if necessary
  4. Choose a map type to use. (Only one map type can be enabled at a time)
  5. Choose which Map Detail layers to enable
  6. Touch the X icon to return to the full map view

Additionally, your saved collections can be displayed on the map as well. When a collection is shown on the map screen, Tracks and Waypoints within that collection will be displayed on the map.

To Hide or Show Collections on the Map:

  1. Open the Tread app
  2. Touch the Map Layers button
  3. Select the Collections tab, if necessary
  4. Touch the Eye icon to hide or show a collection from view.
    • An orange library icon will show next to the eye icon if the collection has information that will show on the map when enabled.
  5. Repeat as necessary, choosing which collections to hide or show.
  6. Touch the X icon to return to the full map view.
