Definitions of Common Acronyms used with CPDLC and FAA Data Comm
Listed below are Definitions for Common Acronyms used with Controller Pilot Data Link Communications and FAA Data Comm
CPDLC: Controller Pilot Data Link Communications. This is a text-based system transmitted over a data link for communication between ATC and the Pilot.
FANS: Future Air Navigation System. FANS includes CPDLC, ADS-C, and AFN.
ADS-C: Automatic Dependent Surveillance Contract. It sends aircraft position reports from the aircraft directly to ATC and does not broadcast to the public like ADS-B.
VDL: VHF Digital/Data Link. The FAA uses this digital VHF link to transfer the FANS 1/A+ CPDLC technology between the aircraft and the ground.
ATN: Aeronautical Telecommunications Network. A network specifically designed for use by ATC for air traffic communications.
ACARS: The Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System. A classic airplane data link that uses short character-based messages used in many applications.
AFN: ATC Facilities Notification. An ATS application that establishes your identity with ATC before CPDLC. It is part of FANS 1/A.
ARTCC: Air Route Traffic Control Center.
