Swing Metrics Displayed on My Approach R50
The Distance Range mode on the Approach® R50 launch monitor allows you to practice on a virtual driving range, and provides detailed metrics for every shot recorded.
This metric data should be shared with a professional golf instructor for proper interpretation in order to improve your game.
Changing Default Swing Metrics
During a Distance Range session, ball speed, launch angle, launch direction, and spin rate metrics will be displayed on the screen of the Approach R50. To change the default swing metrics shown on the Map screen follow the steps below.
Press the settings button in the bottom right corner.
Select View Settings.
Select Map.
Select Customize Shot Data.
Press and drag the two lines on the right side of each metric to change the order of your swing metrics.
Press Save.
NOTE: The top four data fields on this list will be the ones displayed on the Map screen.
The left side of the screen will show you additional swing metrics including averages for the shots recorded in that session with each club you have used. To change the metric displayed press the swing metric name and select a new data point to track. Pressing the three lines next to the swing metric will allow you to filter your metrics for each club.
Viewing Additional Swing Metrics
You can view additional swing metrics during the Distance Range session by following the steps below.
Press the settings button in the bottom right corner.
Select View Settings.
Select Data Fields.
Press the 'X' to close out the settings screen.
Press Done to return to your Distance Range session.
Listed below are the available metrics related to your swing. You can also view these descriptions on the Approach R50 by pressing and holding on a specific metric.
Apex Height: The maximum height of a shot.
Attack Angle: The angle the club head is moving toward or away from the ground when it makes impact with the ball. Shots hit off the ground should have a negative attack angle to ensure the ball is struck before the ground. For drives, a positive attack angle is desired to maximize distance.
Backspin: A measurement of how quickly a ball is spinning backward (toward you) after impact. Using a club that generates loft and a negative attack angle can produce a shot with more backspin.
Ball Speed: The velocity of the ball immediately after impact.
Carry Deviation Angle: The angle between the target line of a shot and the estimated location where it first makes impact with the ground, assuming the ground is perfectly flat.
Carry Deviation Distance: The distance between the target line of a shot and the estimated location where it first makes impact with the ground, assuming the ground is perfectly flat.
Carry Distance: The estimated distance a shot travels in the air, assuming the ground is perfectly flat.
Club Face: The angle that the face of the golf club is pointing at impact in relation to the target line.
Club Path: The angle that the head of the golf club is traveling at impact in relation to the target line.
Club Speed: The velocity of the golf club right before impact.
Face to Path: The difference in angles between the club face (the direction the club face is pointing) and the club path (the direction the club head is travelling).
Launch Angle: The vertical angle at which the ball is traveling at impact.
Launch Direction: The angle at which the ball is traveling at impact in relation to the target line.
Sidespin: Sidespin is a measurement of how quickly a ball is spinning sideways after impact. Some sidespin is desired when hitting a draw or fade.
Smash Factor: Ball speed divided by club speed at impact. If a club speed of 100 mph (160 kph) generates a ball speed of 150 mph (241 kph), the smash factor for that shot is 1.5. For drives and other shots where you are going for distance, a higher smash factor is desired. Increased club loft decreases smash factor.
Spin Axis: The axis that a golf ball rotates around after impact. It is measured in degrees offset from an axis perfectly parallel with the ground. Spin axis impacts how much a particular shot will lift and curve.
Spin Rate: A measurement of how quickly the ball is spinning after impact. More loft and club speed tend to increase spin rate. Spin rate is measured directly when possible. If it is displayed in italics, that means it was estimated based on other available data points.
Total Deviation Angle: The angle between the target line of a shot and the estimated location where it comes to rest, assuming the ground is perfectly flat.
Total Deviation Distance: The distance between the target line of a shot and the estimated location where it comes to rest, assuming the ground is perfectly flat.
Total Distance: The estimated distance a shot travels both in the air and on the ground assuming the ground is perfectly flat.
