How to Activate inReach on a Tread Device

Before you can use the messaging and SOS functions on a Tread® - SXS Edition, Tread® - Overland Edition, or Tread® - XL Overland Edition GPS navigator, you must create an account and activate a service plan for the device. If you are having issues logging into your inReach® account or creating a new account, refer to Related at the bottom of the page.

NOTE: Credit or debit card information will need to be provided in order to complete activation steps below.

Activating a New inReach Satellite Communicator


New Users Without an Account Steps

IMPORTANT: If you have previously used your device with the Garmin Express™ software or the Tread® app, follow the steps under Users Who Initially Paired and Created an Account in the Tread App.
  1. Go to the Garmin Explore™ website
  2. Select Off-Road Navigators on the Explore website home page
  3. Select Get Started under the appropriate Tread model being activated
  4. Enter the Tread device's IMEI number and Authorization Code (found by selecting inReach from the home screen), and then click Next
  5. Click Create One next to Don't have an account?
  6. Enter your name, email, and a password
  7. Review the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy before agreeing
  8. Click Create Account
  9. Select the country of your billing address, and then click Next
  10. Select the appropriate plan for you:
  11. SOS step:
    • Read through the included SOS benefits, then click Next
  12. If desired, choose the additional Search & Rescue Insurance. This is not required. Click Add or Skip
  13. Check the box to agree to the Automatic Renewal, then click Next
  14. Read the terms and click Accept & Continue
  15. Enter your personal information, then click Next
    • Emergency Notes is a good place to add information of any known medical concerns. If you have additional coverage for medical evacuation or search and rescue, you can include that and how to get in contact with the company providing that service. Example:

  16. Add Emergency Contacts information, then click Next
  17. Review all entered information to confirm it is correct
  18. Enter your billing information, then click Complete Activation
  19. Follow the prompts to finish activating your inReach satellite communicator and account
  20. Follow the steps in Syncing, Adding, and Deleting Garmin Explore Data on a Tread Device.
  21. Take the device outside to acquire satellites which will complete the activation process.

Existing inReach Users Steps

NOTES: Consumer plan accounts can have more than one inReach device with an active subscription on their account, but can only assign one active inReach satellite communicator for use at a time. Before adding an additional device, see Adding an inReach Device to an Existing Consumer Account. If you are operating as a business or organization and need to add additional users to your account, a Professional subscription is required.   1. Go to the Garmin Explore™ website.
  2. Select Sign In.
  3. Log in to your account.
    • If needed, reset your password by selecting Forgot Password?
  4. Select Plans & Devices at the top of the page.
  5. Select Add inReach Device.
  6. Select Get Started
  7. Enter the Tread device's IMEI number and Authorization Code (found by selecting inReach from the home screen), and then click Next
  8. Select the appropriate plan for you:
  9. SOS step:
    • Read through the included SOS benefits, then click Next
  10. If desired, choose the additional Search & Rescue Insurance. This is not required. Click Add or Skip
  11. Check the box to agree to the Automatic Renewal, then click Next

Users Who Initially Paired and Created an Account in the Tread App Steps

  1. Go to the Garmin Explore™ website.
  2. Select Sign In.
  3. Log in to the same account you use in the Tread app.
    • You may be asked to select your country and notified that your account needs to be created
  4. Select Plans & Devices at the top of the page.
  5. Select Activate for the desired device.
  6. Select Get Started
  7. Enter the Tread device's IMEI number and Authorization Code (found by selecting inReach from the home screen), and then click Next
  8. Select the appropriate plan for you:
  9. SOS step:
    • Read through the included SOS benefits, then click Next
  10. If desired, choose the additional Search & Rescue Insurance. This is not required. Click Add or Skip
  11. Check the box to agree to the Automatic Renewal, then click Next
  12. Read the terms and click Accept & Continue

Registering Your Tread Device

  • Your Tread is registered automatically during activation of service to the device, or adding it to your Garmin Explore account. For more information, refer to Related below.
  • It can also be registered in the Tread® app or in Garmin Express™ .

The Tread receives software and map updates through a Wi-Fi connection or in the Garmin Express software.
